PITTSBURGH – Forbes Field hosted the premium fight card of the month, featuring current #1 challenger for the UoLBA crown, John C. Heenan, against 8th ranked Leroy Jones. Heenan must have read the pre-fight press on the match, which indicated he would have an easy time dispatching Jones. The Benicia Boy appeared to have taken the bout lightly, packing a few extra pounds into the ring with him. Jones, for his part, was primed for a big night. Heenan was soon to regret his lack of training, falling behind in the early rounds to his much more active opponent. After 5 rounds, Jones led on all cards, and the crowd began to believe the seemingly invincible Heenan was on his way to defeat. But Heenan’s devastating punch remained despite his lack of training for the bout. The sixth proved to be the turning point in the match, as Heenan’s power finally caught up with Jones. Jones staggered around the ring throughout the round, finally hitting the canvas for a six count in the last minute of the round. Jones was not the same fighter from this point onward, as Heenan continued to connected with the face and body of his wilting opponent. Jones lasted the match, but when it was over, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that Heenan was the winner.

On the undercard, Jim Harvey remained undefeated in a very impressive win over Peter Maher. Many experts considered Maher the favorite in the match, and the Line had Maher a 3-1 favorite going in. But Harvey ignored popular opinion, winning almost every round in a dominating effort over his Irish challenger. In other matches, Tommy Chandler continued to impress in a first round knockout over Dan McCarty, and Joe Choyinski won a tight victory over Alonzo Johnson
