July 1890 results from Soldiers Field
Chicago - The buzz after tonight's fights was not about the main event, where Peter Maher easily dispatched challenger John Clow to move to 27th in the UoLBA, it was about the tremendous contest between Joe Choyinski and Jimmy Elliott. Elliott has been very vocal so far about his pitiful ranking this year in the UoLBA, and tonight he was out to prove his mettle. Choyinski, an up and comer at 24 in the rankings, was on the edge of contention.
Choyinski dominated the early rounds, chasing Elliott with several hard shots. Elliott, true to his developing image as the UoLBA's "Bad Boy", kept the referee busy with warnings, and lost a point in the 5th for a rabbit punch. But by the 8th, Choyinski was beginning to fade, and evidence of overtraining started to become apparent. Elliot finally found paydirt in the 9th, dropping the Chrysanthemum for a quick 1 count, and again in the 10th for a six count. Choyinski hung tough, but the third shot, a thunderous right in the 11th, was more than he could absorb, and Choyinski failed to rise from the canvas, ending the match and handing Elliot his ticket into the top 25 for the first time this year. The referee's scorecards after the bout showed an even match before round 11.
