UoLBA Heavyweight Title Fight - 1890
CHICAGO - Not an empty seat can be found tonight in Chicago's Soldier Field. A restless capacity crowd awaits the commencement of tonight's fight between The Benicia Boy, John C. Heenan and Canadian slugger John J. Dwyer to determine the first ever Heavyweight title belt holder in the UoLBA.
Each fighter enters tonight's contest with a flawless record. Each has dominated all comers to date. Each predicts victory tonight. Both Heenan and Dwyer are said to be in top shape for this match, certainly the most important in either fighter's young career to date.
A roar from the crowd signals the appearance of John Dwyer's entourage as it approaches the ring. Dwyer appears confident as he greets fans along his route to destiny. Dwyer enters the ring, and prepares to go to work.
Moments later, John Heenan makes his appearance, and it is immediately evident that the American carries the adoration of a good majority of tonight's audience. Heenan is practically mobbed as he makes his way to the ring.
Ring announcer Chuck Hall makes a theatrical but largely unnecessary introduction of the two fighters to thunderous applause from the delirious crowd. After final instructions from Referee Ernesto Magana, Heenan and Dwyer retreat to their respective corners in anticipation of the opening bell.
Round 1 - Both fighters appear to have thrown caution to the wind, each coming out with blood in his eye. Dwyer wings a wild left at the head of Heenan that misses badly. Dwyer's lunging swing leaves him vulnerable to Heenan's deadly right, and Heenan wastes no time deploying it, hurting Dwyer with a wicked right cross. A follow-up cross connects, and Dwyer rocks back, no doubt regretting his reckless advance. Only a minute has passed in the round, and already the action is furious. Heenan presses his advantage and manuevers Dwyer to the corner. The crowd roars as Heenan throws a flurry of punches, but most of them bounce off of the arms of Dwyer. The Canadian waits for an opening and sends a right hook slamming flush into the jaw of Heenan. Heenan is staggered by that bomb. Heenan backs up, throwing defensive punches to keep his opponent at bay. Dwyer advances on Heenan, trying to land another damaging blow. Dwyer swings and misses, and Heenan digs a solid jab to Dwyer's midsection. Dwyer slows a little. In the final minute of round 1, both men are throwing less and moving more, an evident result of each feeling the power of the other. At 2:38 in the round, Heenan sends a smashing hook to the side of Dwyer's head. Dwyer is suddenly in trouble. Dwyer clinches and holds on until his head clears. The round ends to thunderous applause from an appreciative crowd at ringside. The round is probably Heenan's, but not by much. It remains to be seen if the powerful blows each fighter absorbed will have lasting effects in later rounds.
Round 2 - Both fighters appear to begin the round in good shape. Dwyer manuevers Heenan into a corner. Dwyer delivers a short clean hook flush to the jaw of Heenan. Oh my - Heenan has dropped to the canvas like he's been poleaxed. Magana begins the count...
