The Head Coach will have meetings with the Coordinators and make the ultimate decision on what direction or system to use, but the coordinator implements it. On game day, the only direct decision a Head Coach will typically make is whether to punt, kick a field goal, go for it on 4th, etc. He can easily make these decisions without the use of a head set. There are plenty of other guys on the sidelines that can communicate his decision to whoever is on the other end of the headset upstairs. Add to all this the fact that there is approximately a month of preparation time for bowl games instead of one week and I doubt there was much need for him to communicate with the coordinators...they had probably already game planned for every conceivable situation.
