Id say for the 1 year contract the July date should be fine. Not only did that player sign a 1 year deal but other GMs didnt beat other offer so he wasnt all that desireable anyways.
You are basically trying to prevent the Superstars and Stars from moving over and over again which happens in some leagues. Joe Randa is a journeyman player at this point and is just happy to be in the league.
