Not just between teams in the same league, but teams in different leagues too. Selling off promising players was the way many a minor league team used to turn a nice profit back in the days when the minors were more independent entities and not simply farm teams of major league clubs.
The Baltimore Orioles of the International League during the early 1920s is a great example of this.
I thought about posting a thread about the selling of players for cash, with some specific examples from the aforementioned minor league team.
