I've seen this happen -- though only once in season....
Happens quite a bit to me in spring training though. I generally teach minor leaguers to play multiple positions in-season, and wind up with players with a lot of D and E ratings at positions. Sometimes these players become role players for me -- the LH thumper off the bench, the 5th OF who does my pinch-running, etc.
I jack up their points in specific categories like plate discipline or power at the expense of their defense - and eventually some of their positional ratings will disappear.....
It makes sense if you think about it... 10 years down the road, I doubt you could realistically expect to see Josh Phelps ever catch again.
Also - re: arm ratings, the process is slow, but using Rolens original roster set from last year, Chipper Jones had no OF arm rating.... after a couple seasons, his arm made it up to a 'D' rating.
