The White Sox are rumored to be talking to the Phillies about Jim Thome. Thome would be sent to the Sox for some combination of Aaron Rowand, Jose Contreras, and Brandon McCarthy. The Phillies would also be paying the "majority" of Thome's contract.

Do the White Sox really need Thome? I think Contreras will only get better. The White Sox have six starters but I would categorize Contreras as #2 in their roation. He had a dominant second half of the season and will probably carry over to this season. I guess if Philly pays off the $45 million (approximate) he is scheduled to receive for the next 3 years, it would make the deal much more fair. It still does not make much sense for the White Sox to do.
