That's what I thought... My other option is to release those guys from their teams at the end of this season and then edit their team expenses to compensate for the contracts. Lots of editing, but there are workarounds it seems.

Yes, unfortunately, there is no way to edit contract extensions in the current year. Another quirk (I think it's still true) is that if you release these guys and they get re-signed in that season, the contract extension comes with them.
