Late season callup Waite Hoyt was outstanding again and registered his fourth win and second shutout, tossing a six-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks...Joe Gordon (.241) rapped three hits and an rbi and Bill Dickey (.265) drove in two with his 7th home run...the Red Sox starter Joe Wood's shoulder stiffened up and he left in the fourth inning...he will miss about a week...the triumph maintained New York's nine game edge over the second place Tigers.

The Tigers put a halt to the A's five-game win skein...Ty Cobb (.337) delivered the knockout blow, a three-run shot in the sixth off Rollie Fingers to put Detroit up for good...Harvey Kuenn (.304) and Charlie Gehringer (.279) also rang up roundtrippers...John Hiller saved it for Hal Newhouser, who fanned nine in seven innings of work and yielded only one earned run.

PIRATES RALLY LATE TO NIP SEVENTH PLACE BRAVES AND REGAIN THE NL'S TOP SPOT FROM THE PHILLIES, WHO FELL TO THE FIFTH PLACE CHICAGO CUBS...WHILE THE FOURTH PLACE GIANTS EDGED THE ST. LOUIS REDBIRDS...PITTSBURGH IS ONE GAME UP ON PHILADELPHIA.

Big Poison lived up to his name...Pittsburgh's Paul Waner (.291) went 3-5 with two late inning doubles to power in three crucial scores...in the last of the ninth he drove in Pie Traynor (.379) for the game-winner and sent Boston to its third successive loss...in the top of the ninth the Braves Chipper Jones (.244) tripled to deadlock the score at 4-all...then Roy Face came in with no outs and did not allow Jones to score.

The Cubs' Moe Brown mowed down Philadelphia, stopping them on just five hits to spin his fourth shutout and move to the top of the major league list with sixteen victories...it was a tough loss for the Phils as they dropped one game behind the first place Pirates....SS Bill Dahlen (.311) was 4-5 with one rbi...CF Turkey Stearnes (.328) drove in the other two runs.

New York lefty Carl Hubbell was the King of the Hill today against the Cardinals...he scattered eight hits, fanned four and issued a couple of walks...Tom Haller (.191) and Barry Bonds (.281) supported him with home runs.

Brooklyn is third, trailing the NL leading Pirates by 4.5 games with the Giants fourth, five games behind, the Chicubs are sixth, 5.5 out, while sixth place St. Louis is now 6.5 games in the rear..
