James' career starting out against the local club fighters was not all that great compiling a 10-5-1 record in his firs 2-1/2 years of boxing. Then after suffering a 5th round KO loss to Zachary Nicholas, things started to turn for the better. James won 16 of his next 18 fights, the non win bouts being draws. Those wins included against Alf Robinson in October 1937 and in February 1938 he defeated Jim Wilde for the vacant Welsh Heavyweight Title when Wilde was DQ'd in the 15th round. In September of that year he stopped Ben Foord in the 9th round. A month later he won his 16th fight in that span giving him a 26-5-3,19KO record. James had been stopped only twice.
In December James started making his move up in competition when he took on former British Commonwealth HW champion Larry Gains who was entering the twilite of his career. James took GAins the distance but ended loosing the 12 round decision. He followed that with another 12 round decision loss to another English heavyweight great, Jack London. A month later in May 1939 James looses for the 3rd straight time, a 9th round TKO to Manuel Abrew. A couple months later he successfully defends his Welsh HW title with an 11th round TKO over Jim Wilde, but it's the only bright light in a dismal 2-13-0,2KO slide of his career started with those three previous losses.
James wins only one more fight while loosing 10 more including again to Larry Gains, Arthur Saad, London for a second time, Bruce Woodcock, Charlie Collett, Len Bennett and finally in his last career bout he's KO'd in the 2nd round by Dennis Powell loosing his Welsh HW title to Powell, in August 1949. The Bennett and Powell defeats came 2 plus years layoff after his Collett loss in July 1946.
