Collett started out 16-7-1,11KO in his first 5 years fighting mainly in Watford, England against the fellow local club fighters. In July 1945 he knocked out Len Bennett in the 4th round. Over the next 5 years, Collett became much more active in the ring compiling a 24-13-1,20KO record. The level of competition increased as he traveled about other parts of England. He never fought outside his native homeland though.
During that second five years he fought Bennett 3 more times defeating him twice, lost three times to Reg Andrews, drew once and defeated once Al Marson. Collett also won fights against George James, Jim Wilde, Hugh McDonald, and Ben Valentine while loosing bouts to Alf Brown, Jack Gardner, Don Cockell and Ray Wilding.
