Disqualification costs Papke title and undefeated streak
I am going to list the before and after rankings now on the fight cards listed as (before/after) all rankings will be the LBA rankings unless it's a title fight for another organization.
June 16, 1909
Evidently (and I'm sorry to be blunt) referee Julio Alvardo likes the taste of Papke's nuts because he wouldn't get off them all night. Billy Papke (C/2) (17-1) dominated the entire fight with Charles McCoy (1/C) (22-9-3) but Alvardo warned Papke for everything he did. Holding and Hitting 3 times, Keep his punches up 3 times, leaning on McCoy's neck once, and Keeping his glove open while hitting once.
Papke was warned a total of 8 times and penalized a point twice. Finally in the 14th Alvardo stopped the fight. At which point Papke had to be restrained from knocking Alvardo out of the ring. Police had to be brought in as fans tried to get at Alvardo with intentions of lynching him.
Papke had dominated the fight, knocking McCoy down on two seperate occasions. I had the fight 126-120. T.C. Dale had it 125-120. The official judges had it 125-119/126-120/125-120.
An immediate rematch has been ordered and the LBC had refused to give the title belt to McCoy (a first in the LBC). The title has been declared vacant and the two will refight in August.
