THE BAD
-in 1960 the development gods continued to be unkind on the Tigers. Long followed his ROY year last year with a decent year stat-wise. However, multiple hits to his power ratings and also some valuable CON talent loss... it is very unlikely that he'll be able to repeat this years #1 in HR tie next year. Several other prospects also lost talent making their chances of being impact major league players very slim.
-SP Perry Wanklen lead the league in losses... although he did at least manage a Player of the week in September pitching two consecutive 3H shutouts and then allowing only 1 run in his final game of the season. He finished 5-1 in his final 6 games, so there is some hope for this guy.
-Injuries... we had some bad timing with injuries, but honestly, we should probably put this in the good category as we clearly faired better than other teams, especially the way we avoided season enders and career enders like Cleveland's devastating loss of Herman Labombard.
THE GOOD
-Larry Long was #1 in the entire league in RBI, tied for #1 overall in HR. He was also #1 in the AL in TRPL (tie) & SLG. He was an all star. He also was the Batter of the Month in August going .290, 11HR, 28RBI, 18R. Pretty good stuff the year following his ROY award.
-David Castaneda got his 2000th career hit on 4/26/1960, off Lukas Dietrich (CLE)...
-Luke Logan was only a few SB short of the Tiger record for most in a season.
-Dick Sharkey managed a 17-13 record on a team that went 64-90. I dubbed him our "ace" at the start of the season and he responded with the best effort of all our SP.
-Closer John Patterson lead the AL in saves by 5 despite our terrible record.
-Bub Turnbull tore up AAA going .329 for two seasons and then made his ML debut as a September call up this year hitting .278 for the month. He's got a legitimate shot at ROY next year.
-SS Edgar Dillon is progressing nicely going from A-ball to AA. Our coaches are now claiming he's already ready for AAA. If he were to have a good spring training then we would be forced to make a decision at SS sooner than we expected. He's clearly the better glove over Turnbull there and Turnbull really looks best defensively at 1B. But then we'd have to displace Allen. And then there's Nasty Camacho... another average glove but reliable hitter who will continue to be forced into super sub duty. We clearly have a log jam in middle IF. But then again, Long's talent drops have made us nervous enough about 3B so we are not so eager to deal Turnbull who could move to 3B instead of 1B if he had to. Too many possibilities... hurting my brain. There should be some interesting ST battles.
