A Conversation Between Colleagues
"They're already talking about kicking us out of the league, John. I know we're only here because you pulled strings for me, but the others still aren't happy about having to travel all the way out here for games. They're just looking for an excuse to give a team to someone closer in."
"Carroll, it's been a week. Have patience." John Baxter leaned back in his chair. The reception on the videophone was spotty at best, and Marsein was indeed a long way away for a telecommunications system that was held together, figuratively, by duct tape and twine, but he still kept his annoyance from his face. He needed Eichhorn on board if the Bay League was going to get anywhere someday.
The screen filled with static, and only the voice transmission came through. "If we play .200 ball all season, I can't say that I won't agree with the others. It's a lot of expense for us as well. The other teams only come here a couple of times. We have to travel every time we leave Marsein."
Baxter ran his hands through his thinning black hair. "Am I not giving you enough to make your travel expenses palatable, Carroll? If you want out, get out now. It's costing me money to keep you around, but if you're having second thoughts, then we need to come up with a different plan."
The video transmission cleared for a moment, showing Eichhorn quickly shaking his head. "No, no, John. It's going to be fine, you're right. DeGray and Isenhour are going to start hitting and we'll win some ballgames. Forget I said anything."
Baxter had to keep from laughing. He needed Eichhorn, but the chances of Eichhorn growing a spine any time in the next five years were miniscule. And that meant Eichhorn needed him, and his money. It was all much too easy.
"I've already forgotten, Carroll. My best to Marie and your kids."
"I'll be sure and pass that on to her, John."
