George Chuvalo's Opponents
After the easy wins over the likes of Olson, Brtko, Hafer, Russell, etc. over the past months, Chuvalo started getting tougher competition lined up to meet him in the boxing ring. On September 9th, 1957 Chuvalo climbed into the ring at the Maple Leaf Gardens against veteran heavyweight Bob Baker. Chuvalo's still raw abilities apparently showed through some as he lost an 8 round unanimous decision.
Chuvalo then took off from the ring unitl January 27th, 1958 when he fought Cuban Julio Mederos at the Maple Leaf Garden. Mederos was knocked down twice in 2nd round on the way to a 10 round UD victory for Chuvalo.
