I would bet there's much more to it than just acquiring Payton. My thought is he is insurance in case they have to deal Kotsay. If they sign Kotsay, they'll trade Byrnes and Payton will take over with pretty much the same role as Byrnes. Or this could be the beginning of one of Billy's three-team trades.
