July 18: In what was later revealed as false testimony, the Washington Senators' owner denied before the Celler committee that he had any ties to Redlegs ownership or has favored them in any trades. This accusation went back to a 1956 trade that sent pitcher Louis Schmit and outfield prospect Vasily Zimyanin to the Redlegs near the end of spring training for two relief pitchers. Two days later, Cincinnati shipped those same two players to the Cardinals for outfielder Walter Davis.
