1957 All-Star Game
Griffith Stadium, Washington DC
The AL played this game 3 players short with pitchers
Bourbon Allen Jr. and
Jackie Bowen and 3B
Wilford Woodworth all out with injuries.
Martin Gwaltney started the game for the AL. He sat down the first seven batters he faced, but a single by Pirates catcher
Doug Provenzano gave the NL its first baserunner. Pinch hitter
Abe Arsenault doubled, moving Provenzano to 3rd, and then SS
Roger Joyce singled home a run. Gwaltney then struck out
Rex Seelinger before getting Brooklyn's
Mark Silcox to fly out to end the top of the 3rd.
For the NL, Chicago's
Randy Liebermann pitched two solid innings to start the game, and Brooklyn's
Joe Helton pitched a scoreless 3rd. In the 4th, Chicago's
Denny Evers came in to pitch and was greeted with a solo homerun to right field by Kansas City slugger
Charlton Brown. In the 6th inning, Brown hit a 2-run homer off Brooklyn's
Tom Dufresne, and that was all the American League would need.
