That Straw and McReynolds had better years than Gibson is very debatable! Off memory, Straw had more homers but lower average than McReynolds and Gibson. Van Slyke was right there too. All four were very comparable that season. The two Mets probably split some votes and the fact that Gibson led a rag tag bunch of Dodgers to the NL West title no doubt got him some votes.
