Actually as long as the player receives no ML playing time then the game will use the last year they have any stats for (ie if you were to import Ty Cobb into your league and keep him off a teams major league roster then at the end of the season if he retired it would say he was inducted in 1928 or 1929 (can't recall his last year off the top of my head) also his card would only show his last year played also.) The only problem is that they will not be sorted by retirement years it would go by whatever order the players retired in, but I imagine that isn't that big of a deal.

The best way that I have found to accomplish the no playing time is to play out your first season and prior to hitting "Proceed to next Season" import all the players that you want career stats for. That way you don't have to go through and give each player an injury to keep other teams from claiming them as free agents. In most instances all the players imported will retired when you proceed forward but on occasion there will be some that are stubborn and hang on for 1 more year, you'll want to doublecheck the new career leaderboard and make sure none are marked as active. I did this a couple of times for v3 and to import then entire top 25 for all the listed stats only took about a hours worth of time.
