April In Review

Who would of thought that the Phillies would be near the top of the NL East the way their season started? Losing 2 all-stars, and another top pitcher in the first week, everybody counted them out quickly. Well, they won 7 of their last 8 heading into May, in large due to GM Ed Wades quick trades.

David Bell was quickly shipped to Seattle to make room so Chase Utley and Placido Polanco could control the IF, but that didn't last long either. The Phillies in need of a new RF after Bobby Abreu went down for the year, Chase was involved in a deal to bring Austin Kearns over, and the fans were ecstatic. After a long stretch of hitless games, the Phillies wasted no time in sending him over to the Yankees for Gary Sheffield, Bernie Williams, and Paul Quantrill.

On the pitching front, disgruntled pitcher Vicente Padilla got his trade he was seeking, and landed in Seattle. Coming over was two pitchers, both undefeated, in Ron Villone (4-0, 0.54 era) and Joel Pinero (5-0, 3.74 era).

Also making quick waves since his arrival is middle reliever BJ Ryan. Ryan has quickly built a fan base despite only pitching 6.1 innings for the Phills. Ryan was released by Baltimore, and signed to a 1 year deal, has yet to give up a run in those innings, and allowed only 2 hits, with 7 strikeouts.

In the hitting department, the Phills are lead by their 2 stars Jim Thome and Pat Burrell. Both have started the season hitting over .300, with Burrell having 8 home runs, and Thome 10. Both are also over 25 rbis.

The Phillies have 1 game left with Florida, then travel to Houston for a 3 game set. Tomorrow, Graves (2-3, 5.53 era) takes on Josh Beckett (1-2, 5.29 era).
