I don't see the hype about BABIP. If you have a high strikeout guy (batter or pitcher), his BABIP may be high but his overall AVG/OBA may be low. For a hitter, you may know if he doesn't strike out, he may have a good shot to drive in some runs, but his AVG is going to tell you his overall chance of doing anyhing.

For a pitcher, if his OBA is low but his BABIP is high, you know he has to strike the guy out or you're in trouble.

Its a different stat to look at, but I don't see an applicable use for it.
