In Chicago Lou Gehrig knocked a couple of homers and batted in 5 runs in the Yankees' first game shellacking of the White Sox...They hammered Wilber Wood for 6 runs in 4 innings...winning pitcher Lefty Gomez pitched a steady 7-hitter although bothered by control problems at times...he walked 5.

In game two third place Chicago gained a split with New York with a 3-run third off of new mound acquisition Rube Foster to remain 2 games out of first in the AL chase...Red Faber, who is not in the regular starting rotation, got the start for the tired White Sox staff, and helped his own cause with a 2-run threebagger and got his first win this season...Bobby Thigpen got him out of trouble with the bases full in the 7th and was rewarded with his 5th save...Thigpen held the Yanks runless in the last 2 innings...8 walks kept Faber in hot water...the Sox's Frank Thomas crushed his 15th home run...Foster calmed down after the 3rd inning ordeal and blanked the Chisox for the next 4 frames...he struck out 9 in 7 innings...NY's Lou Gehrig had 6 rbis in the doubleheader and took over the MLB rbi lead with 64...Detroit's Hank Greenberg is now second with 61.

the second place Tigers' Tommy Bridges outdueled Cleveland's lefty Herb Score in the opener of a doubleheader at Briggs Stadium...he checked the Tribe on 4 hits with 7 K's and only 2 walks...Ty Cobb, the top hitter in the Majors with a .388 average, doubled in all of Detroit's runs in the fifth.

Detroit's new pitcher Hilton Smith was well on his way to his first Major League win...going into the 7th he was up on Cleveland 4-1 and seemingly in control and it looked like the Tigs would win the twinbill and move into a first place tie with New York...then the seventh place Indians exploded for 8 runs against him and fireman John Hiller to overwhelm the Tigers and gain the split...Nap Lajoie (.304) was 4-5 with 3 rbis for Cleveland...Earl Averill (.287) and Joe Sewell (.292) were 2-5 with 2 rbis each...Detroit is still one game behind the Bronx Bombers in the AL.

Washington's Big Train, Walter Johnson tossed a whale of a game in the first game...he checked the A's on 5 hits, struck out 9 and issued 2 BB's...Gary Gaetti's (.302) surging bat walloped his 3rd home run for the Senators.

Fifth place Philadelphia went deep 4 times at spacious Griffith Stadium and spoiled the MLB debut of the Senators Bullet Joe Rogan...Reggie Jackson (.227), Eric Chavez (.243), Jimmie Foxx (.278) and newcomer John Henry Lloyd (.125) all homered...Chavez' 2-run 7th inning shot won the game...Kirby Puckett (.235) pounded one out for the Nats...Rube Waddell fanned 9 for the victory...loser Rogan only surrendered 5 hits...Washington is in fourth place, just 4 games out.

At Fenway in game one of a twinbill the rebounding Red Sox rolled over the Browns with a 4-run barrage in the 7th against loser Mike Cuellar...Johnny Pesky's (.342) 2-run double highlighted the rally...Pedro Martinez was pulled for a pinchhitter in the 7th with it 2-1 in favor of St. Louis...it was only his 3rd win this season...Dick Radatz got his 5th save, but was slapped around for 4 hits and a run in 2 innings of relief.

Recap:
The Red Sox express continued to roll with a sweep of the hapless last place St. Louis Browns...they scored 3 in the 1st, 2nd and 4th and never looked back...it was an easy task for winner Carl Mays with such an offensive outburst...In the last two weeks the Bosox have climbed out of the league celler and moved up to a tie for 5th.
