Recap: In New York, Lefty Gomez (6-4 2.66) hurled the Yankees into sole possession of first place in the AL...fifth place St. Louis put nothing but zeroes until a five-run ninth made it somewhat respectable...Lou Gehrig (.297) and Red Rolfe (.280) hammered two hits and three rbis each...Babe Ruth (.3-6) launched his fifteenth homer, tops in MLB...he totalled two hits and two rbis...Earl Combs (.360) ripped three hits...Ned Garver (3-4 4.21) collected the loss.

WASHINGTON 1 9 1 - DETROIT 0 8 2 (12 innings)

Recap: The fourth place Senators took three of four at home from the Tigers and dropped them down to second place...Washington's Walter Johnson (6-6 3.14) and Detroit's Tommy Bridges (5-3 2.68) brilliantly locked horns for ten scoreless innings...Bridges yielded to Frank Lary (4-4 3.84) ...Johnson went eleven and then gave way to Rick Aguilera...Aguilera (7-0 2.29) won his seventh decision in a row with a runless twelfth and Lary got the loss...a two-out error by first baseman Hank Greenberg set the stage for Cecil Travis' (.293) single to drive in the game's only score...this was the Tigers' third defeat in a row...they now trail New York by a full game...Washington has won ten of the last twelve.

CHICAGO 2 4 0 - CLEVELAND 1 6 0
HR: Cle - Averill (8)
Recap: at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland finesse outfoxed firepower as third place Chicago's crafty Ted Lyons (5-4 2.41) checked the sixth place Tribe on a six-hitter and got the best of speedballer Herb Score (6-6 3.64)...Earl Averill's (.295) eighth fourbagger was the Indians only offensive output...in the opening frame Luke Appling (.287) doubled and scored on a triple by Joe Jackson (.369)...Jackson came across on an rbi grounder by Frank Thomas (.287)...otherwise it was an off day for the hitters.

BOSTON 5 16 1 - PHILADELPHIA 5 (12 innings)
HR: (none)
Recap: The cellar-dwelling Red Sox tied it twice...in the seventh and tenth...and then nipped the seventh place Athletics in the twelfth when Carl Yastrzemski (.235) singled in Nomar Garciappara (.245)...winning pitcher Luis Tiant (2-2 5.23) came on in the top of the last inning and gave up two hits, but then bore down and fanned the last two batters...little lefty Bobby Shantz (0-4 3.28) was dealt another loss...Wade Boggs (.250) stood out for the Bosox with three rbis.

Recap: Seventh place Brooklyn's swift ace Dazzy Vance (9-2 2.63) fired a five-hit shutout against the second place Giants at the Polo Grounds and registered his MLB-leading ninth victory...He also upped his strikeout total by seven to ninety-two, also best in the Majors...four Dodgers had two base hits: Adrian Beltre (.235), Zach Wheat (.316), Duke Snider (.227) and Gil Hodges (.283)...The Dominican Dandy, Juan Marichal (6-3 2.68), was hit hard and was a also little on the wild side and picked up the loss.

CINCINNATI 7 15 1 - PITTSBURGH 5 11 2
HR: Cin - F. Robinson (13) Pinson (4) Pitt - Kiner (5)
Recap: sixth place Cincinnati slammed fifteen hits in support of lefty Eppa Rixey (3-0 3.49), who was tagged for twelve hits by first place Pittsburgh, but he kept them off the scoreboard most of the time and went the full route ...in the seventh Ernie Lombardi (.275) singled in the decisive run and Vada Pinson (.292) walloped a three-run roundtripper to put the Pirates away...Pirate pinchhitter Ralph Kiner made it close in the last of the ninth with a two-run blast...Babe Adams (5-7 3.98) suffered the loss...Pittsburgh's Honus Wagner was welcomed back to the starting lineup after missing nine games due to injury...the Bucs Pie Traynor (.369) went one for five and pushed his hitting streak to seventeen games.

ST. LOUIS 11 12 1 - CHICAGO 1 5 3
HR: Chi - Hartnett (3) StL - Frisch (1)
Recap: The homestanding third place Cardinals took four of the five game series with the last place Chicubs, winning the last four in a row...St. Louis battered starter Lon Warneke and the Cubs for five first inning runs and never looked back... Frankie Frisch's three-run shot and Mort Cooper's (8-5 3.49) capable pitching solidified the victory...Rogers Hornsby (.294) bashed in four runs for the Redbirds.

PHILADELPHIA 8 13 0 - BOSTON 5 9 2
HR: Bos - Mathews (7) C. Jones (6)
Recap: at County Stadium, the visiting fifth place Phillies swept their fourth consecutive contest from fourth place Boston and lashed out thirteen hits off of three Brave pitchers and came away with a hard-fought triumph...Chuck Klein (.301), Andy Seminick (.205) and Lefty O'Doul (.308) punched in two runs apiece...two scores in the seventh and two more in the ninth put Boston away...Philadelphia relievers shined as Jim Konstanty (3-4 3.30) and Curt Schilling (2-6 4.41) held the Braves scoreless over the final two frames...Rick Wise (5-3 4.45) received credit for the win and Schilling secured his first save...lefthander Tom Glavine (3-5 4.01) had a disappointing start and was nailed with the defeat.
