PEP OUTPOINTS ARMSTRONG TO RETAIN TITLE
Willie Pep and Henry Armstrong waged what can best be described as a war for 15 rounds at the New Orleans Arena. When it was all said and done the superior conditioning of the champ won out as Pep took control in the later rounds to win a unanimous decision victory. Pep started quickly and shook the challenger with a pair of quick jabs seconds after the opening bell. After being in complete control of the opening round Pep sat back in the second round and Armstrong came to life.
From rounds two through eight it would be easy to make a case that the challenger won them all as Armstrong landed the better scoring blows despite being much more economical with his punches. The tide turned as we entered round 10 and Pep landed a quick combination that buckled the challengers knees. Armstrong managed to remain upright but from that point on he was completely outclassed by the energetic Pep.
Pep would retain his World Featherweight Title as the bout was scored 144-141, 143-142 and 145-140...all in his favour. With the victory Pep improves to 23-0 and has beaten everyone who is anyone in the division. It is expected his next meaningful defense will be against top contender Sandy Saddler but before then he will probably grab a couple of easy paydays against middle-level pugilists. Armstrong falls to 31-3 with the defeat.

BRUMSEY'S 39 POINTS LEAD PISTONS
After scoring just 8 points in a loss to New York the previous day, Fort Wayne Pistons field general Ryan Brumsey made up for things in a big way with a 39 point, 11 assist night to lead the Pistons past Syracuse 126-114. Brumsey's backcourt mate Mo Hybarger added 32 points in the victory which improves the Pistons record to 4-5.
After starting the season 0-5 the Pittsburgh Pipers won their second straight game, nipping Buffalo 83-81. Ryan Fry led the Pipers with 22 points in a sloppy game where neither side shot more than 35% from the field.
Ethan Milner had 25 points to lead the New Orleans Jazz to a 96-90 victory over visiting Kentucky. It was the highest output of the season for the NBA's all-time scoring leader and moved Milner to with 7 points of the 24,000 mark for his career. The next highest scorer is more than 5000 points behind the 14 year veteran.
In the only other game Kansas City staged a late rally to beat Milwaukee 82-78. The Kings just dominated the boards as Jim Cokley and Bokeem Dillon each had 17 rebounds. Cokley also paced the Kings with 18 points.

SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH
1- HOUSTON: Coming off a school record 24 victory season a year ago including 15-2 in conference play and a run to the Southland title. With a solid nucleus returing including preseason all-conference selections Prince Armstead and Robert Bowlet the Cougars should once again challenge for the conference title.
2- SAM HOUSTON STATE: The Bearkats were just 8-22 last season after making the conference championship game each of the previous two years. This year they figure to be much improved with 4 returning starters including guards Chad Whitt and Lavoris Tyler.
3- NICHOLLS STATE: The Colonels slumped to 12-17 after an 18 win season the previous year. Three starters are back including junior forward Daniel Rosario, a preseason all-conference pick.
4- NORTHWESTERN STATE: With 8 freshman a year ago the Demons won just 8 games and were 4-10 in conference, their worst showing since 1933. Now that they have some experience they should be much improved. Team leader is sophomore forward Grant Letendre, who had 12.5 ppg as a freshman.
5- STEPHEN F AUSTIN: After a 9-5 conference record last season the Lumberjacks made it to the conference tournament finals. It was their first appearance in the Southland Conference title game since they won their only title in 1934.
6- SE MISSOURI STATE: Three straight losing seasons including 9-21 a year ago. The Indians have plenty of experience coming back but they lack the talent to challenge for a conference title.
7- SW TEXAS STATE: The Bobcats surprised everyone by advancing to the Sweet 16 in 1938, the only such run in conference history. Struggled last season with a 7-22 record but have probably the best pure shooter in the conference in junior guard John Murdock.
8- LAMAR: The Cardinals never won more than 18 games in a season and the closest they came to the conference title was a loss in the tournament finals 3 years ago. Center Adam Richard is the best big man in the conference but the supporting cast is very weak.
