MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
TSN UNVEILS IT'S ALL-STAR TEAM
It is little surprise that American League triple crown winner Ted Williams heads the list of players named to the TSN 1947 major league baseball all-star squad. Williams and his Boston Red Sox teammate Babe Young both made the squad. The World Champion Chicago Cubs and the St Louis Cardinals also each placed two players on the team. Shortstop Phil Rizzuto and lefthanded pitcher Vern Olsen are the representatives from the Cubs while St Louis sends catcher Walker Cooper and second baseman Gene Scharein. Rounding out the team are Pittsburgh third baseman Bob Elliott, who was the National League MVP, Cincinnati outfielder Joe Medwick, Browns outfielder Wally Judnich, Cleveland pitcher Bill Lohrman and reliever Jack Hallett of the Chicago White Sox.

1947 marked the second year TSN handed out the allstar honours. There are three players who appeared on both last year's and this season squad. They are Williams, Young and Cooper.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
NO CHANGE ATOP THE POLLS
Notre Dame and Michigan remain 1-2 in the latest college football poll but Texas fell from 3rd to 8th after losing 20-10 to Rice last week. North Carolina moves up one spot to number three followed by Mississippi and then the Owls, who crack the top 5 thanks to the victory over the Longhorns.

As usual Texas is featured in the list of big games for the upcoming week. Bobby *Layne and the Longhorns seem to face a ranked team every week and this one is no different as they visit #12 Southern Methodist in an SWC game. Second ranked Michigan faces a stern test when the Wolverines travel to Illinois to face the 18th ranked Illini. The only other game involving two ranked teams as #19 Kentucky hosting #16 Alabama in an SEC tilt.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
LEAFS BLANK HABS 3-0
With Maurice Richard sidelined the Montreal Canadiens could mount no offensive attack at all and were embarrassed in a 3-0 loss to the Maple Leafs in Toronto. The score does not sound so bad but that is only because Habs goaltender Bill Durnan stood on his head as his club was outshot 49-7 in the game. Ted Kennedy, with a pair, and defenseman Gus Mortson were the only Leafs able to beat the Montreal netminder. Turk Broda turned aside the 7 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season.

Boston handed the New York Rangers their fourth straight loss, blanking the Blueshirts 4-0. Frank Brimsek had an easy time of things facing just 16 New York shots for the shutout. Wally Wilson and Milt Schmidt each had a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who chased New York goaltender just two minutes into the game. Chuck Rayner took over between the pipes for New York after each of the Bruins first two shots beat Henry.

Jim McFadden had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings as Detroit beat the Blackhawks 3-1 in Chicago. Ted Lindsay and Don Morrison also scored for the Wings while George Gee had the lone Chicago goal.

*MIKAN POWERS OLYMPIANS TO OT WIN

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE PREVIEW
The Southwest Conference always has a strong flow of new talent and this season is no different as three SWC teams ranked in the top 20 recruiting classes nationally including Baylor which added the nation's most sought after big man in center Neil *Johnston.
A strong conference that always places several teams in the NCAA tournament field but unfortunately they seem to find a way to exit the tournament early. Only once, Arkansas in 1941, has a Southwest Conference squad won the National Championship. The Razorbacks look loaded this season and may just get their second National Title.

SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE PREDICTED ORDER OF FINISH

1- ARKANSAS: After five straight 20-plus victory seasons the Razorbacks won just 12 games two years ago and 16 last season. However, with a year of experience this young team is now loaded. Junior forward Vern *Mikkelsen is likely ready for the NBA now but chose to stay for another year with the Razorbacks. He and fellow junior Terry Medford made the preseason All-SWC team. Sophomore PG Steven LaCroix had some growing pains last season but if he lives up to his potential the Razorbacks may be looking at their second National Title come April.

2- TEXAS CHRISTIAN: The Horned Frogs won 21 games last season including 11 of 14 conference games before bowing out early in the conference tournament. Center Chancy DePascuale is back for his senior season after averaging 13.5 ppg and 12.3 rpg as a junior. TCU had a good recruiting class including Amarillo native Todd xThompson but they will have a tough time keeping up with the Razorbacks.

3- TEXAS A&M: The Aggies have made 3 straight NCAA appearances after not getting a single invite in their first 12 years. Last season were just 7-7 in conference but got hot and won the conference tournament for the first time in school history. Senior swingman Duez Adams averaged over 15 points a game and is joined by sophomore Art *Burris on tbe preseason all-conference team.

4- BAYLOR: The Bears have won at least 20 games three straight seasons and 7 of the last nine years but lost 4 starters to graduation. In their place they have assembled possibly the greatest one season recruiting class in conference history. Among the 6 new recruits are 4 players who will likely be starters before the season is out including 7'1" center Neil *Johnston, who was one of the most prized recruits in the nation.

5- TEXAS TECH: Were 18-12 last season after winning a school record 27 games and reaching the Elite Eight the previous year. The Red Raiders have a good young team led by sophomore scoring whiz Josh Moran but a lack of experience may hurt this year.

6- SOUTHERN METHODIST: After being a postseason regular for most of the first 13 seasons of the league, SMU has gone two years without a tournament invite. Were last in the SWC with a 2-12 record a year ago but the Mustangs return 6 players who averaged at least 16 mpg a year ago.

7- TEXAS: Missed a postseason tournament bid for the first time in school history after a dismal 7-21 season including 3-11 in the SWC. This could be another long season for the Longhorns but they can take comfort in a strong recruiting class including guard Everett Onukogu.

8- RICE: Traditional conference doormat has made just one NCAA tournament appearance and have had 4 straight losing seasons including two years ago when they hit rock bottom after a 5-24 campaign. The Owls improved to 14-15 a year ago.

BOXING
TENNAGER FELTON WINS 3RD PRO BOUT
19 year old Detroit middleweight Lester Felton improved to 3-0 with a close but unanimous victory over veteran pugilist Sammy Walker at the Motor City Arena. Felton, who is considered one of the best young middleweights in the country, held off an early flurry from the veteran Massachusetts native before taking control in the later rounds. The 27 year old Walker drops to 12-10-1 with the loss.

The big boxing story of the week takes place Friday night with a Halloween evening title fight in New Orleans. Undefeated World Featherweight Champion Willie Pep puts his 22-0 record and his belt on the line against Henry Armstrong. Armstrong, a 35 year old with a 31-2 career mark, is considered the 3rd best featherweight in the world behind Pep and top contender Sandy Saddler. It will be Armstrong's first title shot.
