In addition, veterans can refuse assignment off the 40 man roster as well as to the minors, at which point your only way of removing them is to release them (at which point you will take a financial hit for the remaining value of their contract). If the player has already agreed to a minor league assignment, odds are that he will consent to being removed from the 40 man as well. But I have had players refuse the 40 man removal after agreeing to a minor league demotion (presumably their ratings increased during the interim).
