First Impressions of the Team

Well immediately upon taking the job on 9/14/2005, a couple of things stood out at me. The most obvious was the condition of my minor leagues. Each of my minor league squads, who surprisingly are unnamed (more on this later), was stocked to the gills with players. Most of them scrubs. I quickly purged the ranks and gave 24 players their walking papers. Their free ride was over. It is hard to teach good players when you have bad players taking away their playing time. I have a couple of average looking prospects, but no one that jumps out at me just yet.

I also have to resign a few guys; I wasn’t going to totally scrap the club so I had to keep some key components. Namely 2B Nathan Restivo and CL James Tobin. Both are only 28 and have several more good years in them. My offers are sent to the commissioner’s office, Restivo’s agent was very cooperative telling me exactly what his client wanted. That makes my job a lot easier. The other players who are up for free agency are not worth resigning. I would love to resign Kevin Davis for sentimental value. But I am going to have to let him walk. He is already 40 years old and he needs to call it quits. He wants $2+ million for 1 year, which is cheap but I don’t think he can help us anymore. He leaves with his 1998 World Championship Ring and his untouchable strikeout record. Best of luck to Kevin Davis. Journeyman RF and probable Hall of Famer Fred Plasencia will also not be resigned.

Our financial situation is in wonderful shape. No one is making a lot of money, so we have a lot of flexibility. Our fan base interest and loyalty are both very good and our TV market is Big. A good season will bring in revenue upwards of $100 million. We also have a lot of cash on hand, so expect us to play heavily in the Free Agent Market. We don’t have a whole lot in the minors, so we need to bring in some ball players. A glaring weakness seems to be Starting Pitching. Isn’t this always the case?

If anyone is interested, I would appreciate some suggestions for minor league team names. I would prefer to keep the minor league teams in the general area of my Major League club. So somewhere in the South West United States. Or even Northern Mexico.
