I used Paint Shop Pro 7.34 to create the map. There's actually about 6 layers that you see. I'm not entirely finished with it yet. There are still more cities to add from theh 250,000-500,000 metro population range. I have about 215 cities/metro areas named and populated. I plan on using them all to create minor leagues, etc.
I like the way you named the cities. I have found in my own experience that it's much better for the long-haul to have a 'stake' in your creation. Taking the time initially to create things like you described will only serve to increase your interest in it as it grows and evolves. It will also serve to interest others who may happen by
