One thing I have noticed in using the Lahman Database is that many pitchers (mostly starters) import having a high HBP and WP rating. Go to the player ratings screen and look at the bottom line of ratings. They may have imported with very high numbers. I usually make it a point to go onto every roster and change the numbers to be no higher than 5 HBP 5 WP and 1 balk. You can also adjust the HBP in league totals if you still think it is too high.

I tried to do some research on HBP, but it was very difficult because OOTP doesn't give total HBP under the League Pitching stats. You have to go and pull up each person and manually add them up. My online research showed around an average of 40 HBP per team the last few years. It might be more or less for other eras. Hopefully that helps a bit.
