well - i have, by editing the era settings, had no real problem creating dead-ball type players. the single-season record for HR is 16, when i didnt have the HR setting high enough, and this year's leader should have about 10-12.
why i ultimately disagree with the notion of creating "dead-ball players" is that a simulation's strength - to me - is its ability to translate core ratings different ways. i don't want ty cobb to be a 8-HR guy whether he plays in 1904 or 2004. and i don't want him to make 30 errors in 2004, unless i *do* want him to.
we *do* need a 2-pitcher rotation option, and also the ability to do away with bullpen roles, but i actually get complete games out of starters throughout the league quite often. i'm not really sure how the game has managed to do this, actually. i did bump some starters up to A endurance, but also i guess the sim recognizes 3-pitcher rotations as a time for higher endurance? i'm not really sure.
an area where "dead-ball player" settings would come in handy, for certain, is pitcher batting and pitcher/position players. i've got pitchers in 1887 batting .047. that's not historically realistic, but it's not a huge deal. however, i'd like to see this sort of thing made a variable too, as opposed to hard-wired.
financials are obviously an issue for historical leagues, but that's well enough covered.
