MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
WILLIAMS WINS TRIPLE CROWN
Ted Williams became just the third man in major league history to win the triple crown. Williams went 1-for-3 as his Boston Red Sox lost 2-0 in the season finale against Philadelphia. Williams finishes the season with a .347 batting average, .008 ahead of teammate Johnny Hudson. Williams' 38 homers were 15 more than anyone else in the American League and with 112 rbi's he had 4 more than Wally Judnich of the Browns.
Only George Stone of the Boston Braves in 1913 and the Yankees Babe Ruth in 1926 have managed to lead their league in batting average, homers and rbi's in the same season prior to Williams. Ruth was the only one to lead all three categories outright as Stone tied for the rbi lead. Rogers Horsnby came very close in 1923, missing by 1 home run.
In other American League action on the seasons final day Washington scored 3 times in the tenth inning to beat Detroit 7-4, spoiling the Tigers hopes of a .500 season. The Yankees beat St Louis 6-5 while the White Sox beat Cleveland's b team 5-1. The pennant winning Indians rested virtually all of their starters in preparation for the World Series opener on Wednesday.
The Indians opponents in the Series, the Chicago Cubs, had to put in a little extra duty against Pittsburgh before falling 6-4 in 11 innings. Meanwhile St Louis beat Boston 6-1 to sneak past the Phillies into third place after Philadelphia lost 10-2 to Brooklyn. In the final game the Giants scored in the 10th inning to beat Cincinnati 10-9.

CAROLINA CLIMBS TO #4 IN COLLEGE RANKINGS
On the strength of a shutout victory over Georgia, the University of North Carolina climbed three places in the college rankings released today. The Tar Heels move up to number four but will face a stiff test next weekend when they travel to Texas to face the third ranked Longhorns.
Losses dropped Georgia and Army out of the top 10. In their place are Oklahoma and Rice which move up from 12 and 13 respectively. A pair of 2-0 clubs are the two newcomers in the top 20: California debuts at number 18 after beating Navy 20-17 while Texas Christian blanked Oklahoma A&M 14-0 to claim the 19th spot. Kansas and Rutgers fall out of the top 20.

BROWNS WIN AFC NORTH SHOWDOWN WITH BALTIMORE
Corey Dixon hit a 48 yard field goal with 4 minutes remaining in overtime to give the Cleveland Browns a 34-31 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The Cleveland victory leaves both clubs tied for first in the AFC North at 3-1. Cleveland had a 21-6 lead at the half but a spirited comeback nearly allowed the Ravens to pull the game out.
Cincinnati and Pittsburgh are each a game back of the co-leaders in the AFC North after the Bengals scored a 10-7 victory at Three Rivers. Bud Rutledge and receiver Dralinn Moretti connected on a 19 yard touchdown strike midway through the fourth quarter for the winning score.
Both Miami and Buffalo remain winless after losses to AFC South clubs yesterday. In Miami, the Indianapolis Colts beat the Dolphins 37-27 thanks to four Eric Poppinga touchdown passes while Houston beat the Bills 24-15. It was not a good day for anyone in the AFC East as the Jets and Patriots also lost. 13 fourth quarter points lifted the Titans past the Jets 25-14 while in Jacksonville, Jags running back Reggie Chancey ran for two touchdowns and caught a pass for a third one as the Jags hammered New England 42-16.
The San Francisco 49ers defense made a statement in Chicago. The Niners forced 4 Chicago fumbles and sacked Bears QB Sid *Luckman 5 times, including 3 by DT Ray Steele in a 23-13 victory.
The loss drops the Bears a game behind Green Bay after the Packers hammered the Rams in St Louis 47-16. RB Tony *Canadeo led the Green Bay attack with 177 yards rushing. It was a kicker's day in Detroit as all points came on field goals in the Lions 15-12 win over Arizona.
Philadelphia has sole possession of the NFC East Division lead after beating Carolina 20-16. QB Ken Neal completed 22 of 30 passes for 195 yards and a pair of Philadelphia touchdowns.
Atlanta remains atop the NFC South Division after a 34-17 victory over Washington. Falcons QB Arnie Herber tossed 4 touchdown passes in the win. His favourite target was Duane Whelihan who had 8 catches for 100 yards and 3 scores.
New Orleans and Tampa kept pace with the Falcons. Two Ryan Boyette to Bob Sommer first-half touchdown passes lifted the Saints past the New York Giants 26-3. The Bucs beat Dallas 28-19 but may have lost QB Paul *Christman for a couple of weeks. Christman, who threw 3 touchdown passes in the win, left the game late in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury. Second overall pick Otto *Graham made his pro debut and completed his only pass attempt for a 17 yard gain. A decision on whether *Christman can play next week will be made Tuesday by the Bucs staff. If not *Graham will get his first NFL start.
