JUAN ALBORNOZ WW (1959-1974) Overall rating = 7
Hometown - Santa Cruz, Tenerife, Spain
76(20)-9-3
Albornoz entered his first title fight (Spanish Lightweight) against the vastly more experienced Fred Galiana (113-16-12). The result was a ninth round KO to Galiana. Albornoz took the Spanish lightweight belt in July of 1961 from Jose-Maria Manrique and held it until Jose Cabrera stopped him in February of 1964. Albornoz reclaimed the belt with a decision over Cabrera one month later and defended two more times before moving up in weight and claiming the vacent EBU Jr. Welterweight belt with a 15 round decision over Andro Lopopolo. His stint as an EBU champion was brief, losing the belt in Berlin on his first defence to Wily Quatuor. In three other attempts at the EBU Jr. Welterweight title, Albornoz was stopped by Johann Orsolics and Bruno Arcari and drew with Orsolics. He also won the Spanish Welterweight title and reclaimed the Spanish Lightweight belt between EBU title tries.
Some of his other notable bouts included wins over Bobby Ros (4) and Giordano Campari. A draw with Kid Tano and two losses to Valerio Nunez.
Albornoz retired following his failed EBU title shot against Arcari in 1969 but came out of retirement in 1973 to score three easy victories before Perico Fernandez sent him into retirement for good with a sixth round TKO in 1974.
