i ran into a similar situation in which my leftfielder Rondell White was hurt for 8 weeks.
Good thing for me this happened three weeks before the trade deadline.
So i made some moves and traded away Robin Ventura, Randy Choate, Jerrod Riggan, and two prospects (that had no chance to play on my team) for Chipper Jones, Wes Helms, Damian Moss, and a minor league pitcher.
The deal works out for me b/c i can play Helms at 3B in place of traded away Ventura. Chipper can play LF until Rondell White returns. When White returns i can then move Chipper to 3B. Helms could then become a utility guy for me b/c he plays 1B,3B,LF.
the thing that i also considered was that i have Drew Henson in AAA. Ventura's contract went till 2005 (its currently 2003 in my league) Chipper Jones on the other hand is a free agent after this year.
so i take on some salary to drop salary in the future. I can let Chipper go after this year and place Henson at 3B. Before this move i was contemplating leaving Ventura on the bench b/c i want Henson to play full time as a rookie. I also am considering signing Chipper to maybe a one year deal if he'll take it to give Henson some space to grow. and since Rondell White has two years left in his contract i could try to keep Jones and move him into LF in 2005.
anywayz, wat i'm tryin to say is that i made moves that help me in the future. i realized that Chipper plays LF ( a perfect fit to replace the injured White) but also plays 3B (perfect fit to cover Ventura's hole) in addition he is a free agent after the year and gives me the opportunity to either sign him or give Henson the full time job.
