Fabio Bettini
Roman middleweight who fought out of France. Born 1938. Fought from 1960 to 1974. Record: 44-30-14 (29).
French middleweight champion, 1971-1974. Outpointed by Tom Bogs in January 1973 bout to fill vacant EBU middleweight title.
A difficult fighter to rate. Bettini was consistently inconsistent. Twice he fought Sugar Robinson to a draw. He beat Nessim Max Cohen (see above) and lost to him; beat Gratien Tonna and lost to him. He held his own with the best middleweights of his day, European and American; until the last fight of his career (a KO at the hands of Tonna), he was knocked out only twice (by Rubin Carter and Bo Hogberg). He was a brawler and a head case, capable of a smashing upset or a crushing defeat.
