May 1952

Detoit and Boston remain neck-and-neck in the AL. The Tigers went 19-7 and the Red Sox went 19-8. Boston pulled off another big trade in the process, shipping last season's AL RBI leader Bobby Johnson and 3B Emerson Meggs to the Cubs in return for 3B Ben Lutske and outfielder Will Groaning. The A's went 16-13 and slid 5 games back. The Indians went 6-21 this month to fall 19 games back and cap off a disappointing start to a promising season.

The Cubs moved a half-game ahead of St. Louis for 2nd place but only after going 15-12 this month. The Giants went 16-12 and moved 2.5 games ahead of Chicago.

In The News

May 15: The Red Sox beat the Senators 5–4 in Fenway though odd occurrences interrupted the game. In the bottom of the first, two fraternity boys dressed in baseball uniforms ran onto the field and started throwing a rubber ball around. Two innings later a one-legged man on crutches jumped onto the field to talk to Boston SS Morris Lutske and P Matty Jackson. He then shook hands with Washington base runner Bill Hall before being hurried off the field. After allowing 2 walks in the 1st inning, Washington's Joe Homic did not allow another baserunner until the 7th inning, when Boston scored their first run off back-to-back doubles. Now down 4-1, Boston scored another run in the 8th, and then they scored 3 runs off reliever Cecil Frye in the 9th to win the game.

May 14: Despite eight interruptions by Reds manager Ron Bennarivo asking the umps to examine the ball, Boston's Glenn Howell tossed 8 1/3 scoreless innings. After the last play stoppage, an angry Howell heaved the ball over the umps head, but manager Marcus Fortson calmed the sizzling pitcher down. The game remained scoreless when Howell left the game in the 9th. Then Cincinnati scored the first run in the top of the 12th when SS Dennis Ward hit a sac fly to score pinch runner George Maringo from 3rd. Cincinnati's Robert Datoli came in to pitch the bottom of the 12th, but he loaded the bases. With two outs, Braves 1B Ken Chaucer hit a game-winning 2-run single.

May 22: The Celler committee found legislation for government control of baseball to be unnecessary. It said that the sport can solve its own problems, and opposed legislation exempting the reserve clause from antitrust laws

May 20: Red Sox SS Morris Lutske and Yankees OF Jesse Baker exchanged insults before a game in Boston, then exchanged punches in the tunnel under the stands. It took two coaches and pitcher Billy Hyberg to break the fight up. Lutske went to the clubhouse to change his bloody shirt and got into another brawl with teammate Darrell Thomas. He sat out of the starting lineup, giving the start to Sean Lee. The Red Sox scored 2 runs in the 8th to win 4-3.
