Do you have scouts turned on... if so does the team you control have any?
Keep in mind you will spread the talent extremely thin if you have 30 teams of players from the 1910's. There were only 16 teams back then so you've approximately doubled the number of players, which means all the miserable players have to play more.
The pitchers throwing tons of pitches, is because of the ERA settings... they should complete most games.
I'm in a league; Boys of Summer (cheap plug) we've played 5 seasons so far with only the 16 teams and I've only got 36 players in my entire system. So if you figure that as about average, then you come to the realization that if there are only 36 players a team for a 16 team league, how many players a team will their be for a 30 team league?
I think a lot of what you are seeing is a result of the players being spread thin, and the fact that for that era, the average pitcher rates a 7 or 8 (my team features four starters with 9's and I'm among the worst pitching staffs in the game) and the average hitter rates a 4 or 5. Now you spread 16 teams worth of average players over 30 teams and you make the average pitcher still a 6 or a 7, while the average hitter is only a 3 or a 4, and you'll see that its reasonable to expect a lack of offensive production.
