I'm no techie, either. But HD's now connect to the motherboard with Serial ATA connections instead of IDE cables. I had to buy an adapter on-line that connects IDE HD's to new SATA motherboards. It's only $20, so no big deal. I just felt like a monkey trying to hump a football when I opened the case to install my old HD. I scratched my head and said WTF...
