MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
SENATORS KNOCK OFF RED SOX IN EXTRA INNINGS
Buddy Lewis delivered an rbi single in the top of the 11th inning to give the Washington Senators an 8-7 victory over Boston, spoiling a dramatic Red Sox comeback bid. Trailing 7-3 entering the bottom of the 9th the Red Sox scored 4 times, including a 3-run homer off the bat of Ted Williams with 2 out, to tie the game. The loss drops the Red Sox 5 games behind idle Cleveland in the American League pennant race. The Senators are now just a game and a half behind the Red Sox.

In other American League action Marius Russo hurled 8 innings of 3 hit ball in the Yankees 5-1 win over Detroit while rookie outfielder Wally Westlake's third homer of the season helped Philadelphia past the Chicago White Sox 4-3.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
Charley Schanz won his 19th game of the season and Buster Adams hit a 3-run homer leading Philadelphia past the Chicago Cubs and moved the Phillies to within a game of the National League leaders. Third place Pittsburgh also won, beating Cincinnati 7-4. Reserve infielder Lee Handley had a 5 hit game for the Bucs while Preacher Roe snapped a 4 game personal losing streak and improved his record to 18-6 on the season.

Sam Chapman and Chuck Workman each homered in the Boston Braves 8-0 whitewashing of Brooklyn. For Chapman, it was his league leading 24th round tripper of the season. In St Louis, Vince Dimaggio had 3 hits including a homer to lead the New York Giants past the Cardinals 6-2.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PREVIEW
UCLA & USC CLASS OF THE PACIFIC COAST CONFERENCE
UCLA and USC look like the teams to beat this season in the PCC but do not count out Oregon or California. USC, which suffered through a dissappointing 1946, is rated the 6th best team in the national pre-season poll. UCLA is the only other PCC school in the top 20, holding down the 17th spot. Last season the Bruins were unbeaten until a Rose Bowl loss to Michigan.

The Trojans are considered the creme of the conference thanks to an outstanding defense led by linemen Paul *Cleary and Ralph *Heywood. Senior tackle John * Ferraro and the rest of the line will be the key to the offensive which is led by sophomore QB John *Powers. Junior back Don *Doll handles the bulk of the rushing duties.

Like USC, UCLA's success depends upon the performance of it's veteran defense. Linebackers Don *Paul and Jack *Myers are both possible first round NFL picks. Cornerback Jerry Shipkey and lineman Roy *Kurrasch will also play a big role on the defensive side of the ball. On offense the only thing senior QB Ben *Reiges needs to do is look for receiver Tom *Fears. Fears is a Heisman Trophy candidate and a possible first overall NFL pick.

BOXING
ROMERO WINS EUROPEAN BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE
Former World Bantamweight champion Luis Romero of Spain has reclaimed the European Bantamweight belt. Romero scored a unanimous decision victory over Johnny King in Liverpool last night to get back the title he was forced to surrender when he beat Canadian Fernando Gagnon for the World Bantamweight crown. Romero would lose the world title in his first defense, against Cuban Luis Galvani, freeing him to go after the European belt once again.

The victory improves Romero's record to 22-7-1 while the loss drops King to 37-7. King had claimed the title in July by scoring a unanimous decision over Italian Guido Ferracin in the final of a 4-fighter elimination tournament to replace Romero.

One other bout of note also in the bantamweight division. Hiroshi Horiguchi of Japan scored an 8th round knock out of veteran Canadian Katsumi Morioka in Vancouver. The bout was a tuneup for Horiguchi who will face World Champion Luis Galvani in Tokyo at the end of September.

GOLF
HOGAN HAS CLINCHED MONEY TITLE
With two regular events plus the year end Tournament of Champions still to be played Ben Hogan has already clinched the top spot on the year end money winners list. With 6 victories and 12 top 5 finishes Hogan has earned more than twice as much money as the number two man on the list. He has made the cut in 16 of the 17 events completed so far this season.

Here are the leading money winners on the tour this season. The top 20 will qualify for the Tournament of Champions that features a record $3000 prize for the winner. The top 40 on the money list automatically qualify for their tour card for next season. All remaining golfers will have to go through Q School to regain their tour card.
