He didn't play enough. It will got to someone else like Poulos who gave the A's 540 PA of .333/.378/.416 ball with 69 Runs and 52 RBI.
The worry about would be that he flatten's out because of the "rush" like Baker (Yanks) and Perry (Pirates). He has a higher contact potential than either of those currently, though I don't recall what theirs were when drafted. He is one notch below Baker in power and eye, and even with Perry in those (and one up on Perry in gap).
Ironically, all were taken with the #1-2 pick. Perry played a full year in AAA, Dietrich a little less than half, and Baker went straight into the Yanks starting line-up out of college.
