Meyer Finally Break Through

October 19, 1906

#3 Billy Meyer (20-3-3) scored a UD15 over Champ George Lavigne (18-7-1) to win the LBC Lightweight Championship. This was Meyer's 3rd attempt to win a title and finally broke through with a big win.

Meyer took control of this fight in the 4th when he dropped Lavigne twice and almost ended the fight, but Lavigne held on until the bell. Lavigne's left eye began to swell shut in the 8th, but then he started to battle back, winning 4 of the next 5 rounds.

In the 12th, Lavigne had Meyer helpless on the ropes and it looked for a second the fight might be stopped. When the bell rang Meyer staggered to the wrong corner before correcting himself. He recovered to win the 13th and 14th rounds and seal the fight.

I had it 144-141. Shane McLeod ringside had it 143-143 (due to the ringside experts inability to score a round lower than 10-8). The official judges had it 144-141 (twice) and 143-142.

On the undercard

HW - Jem Mace (9-4-1) UD10 John Knifton (14-12)
LHW - Al Weinig (7-6) UD10 Al Kaufman (3-6)
FW - Oscar Gardner (7-0) TKO4 Simon Curthall (TC) (0-4) (Gardner fought pre-prime in this club fight, with the win moves to prime and up to the main division)
LHW - Dan Flynn (2-1-1) MD6 PJ Rentzler (6-12-2) (Flynn fought as a beginner in this club fight)
BW - Thomas Palmer (11-15-1) UD10 Johnny Reagan (2-11) (club fight)
