It also depends on what era you are playing in which I assume would be modern. In a deadball era it was common to have a three man pitching staff and starters would often pitch the whole game.

Similar to what happened in real life though many of these pitchers will have very short careers due to injuries and such. This is part of the reason staffs have grown to 4 and then 5 starters but note also that their is a school of thought that 5 starters is unnecessary and actually hurts the team due to the often low quality of the 5th starter. Some experts claim a pitcher can go on 3 days rest with little long term effects but whether this plays true in the game is another matter.

I have often thought of switching to a 4 man rotation and I would be curious how things work out if you go this route. Please let us know what happens if you do (over multiple seasons)!
