Complete agreement. There's already a setting to turn off effects (Confetti, etc.) or whatever it's called, and I assumed that turning that off would have also gotten rid of the white flash of death....

I'll answer my own question here - further...

I'll answer my own question here - further research last night isolated the problem to GIMP. As part of troubleshooting, I loaded up the texture in good ol' Paint, made some changes, and it worked....
