Alternatively you can go into the editor of the player and change their league to MLB, but no team.

I do a lot of single division leagues and I've never noticed issues in the way teams are sorted when only choosing (x)...

Not sure why backups would be crashing, but an alternative for the future if necessary is just to copy the .lg folder manually to your backup folder (or elsewhere.)
