add the Nationality column to a view
it displays data just fine

now sort on the column: the flag remains, but the text is gone

Have you considered purchasing Statsplus? That's how most leagues keep everyone up to date. Rosters, stats, players, draft, file upload, team by team exports. It gets better every iteration too.
