Maybe the substitution button should give some visual feedback (highlight the line while it is pressed) so that you know whether you hit the tiny button correctly.

As far as game logs go, how about the ability to save (email?) the game log at the end of the game (and refer to it during the game)? That would be great for those exciting games you'd like to hold...
