What Day is the Last Day of the Season?

Specifically, what is the last day to release a player in an automatically-renewing contract before they're awarded a new contract? Is that day different for players getting arbitration?

He was even batting #2 most games.

The only thing that I can see that upset him was that he wasn't batting 3/4/5.
