The Baltimore Blackbirds

1 Attachment(s)
Attachment 812656

The San Diego Apostles take home the 1st world series title in the inaugural 1992 season of Major League Baseball.

I managed the Baltimore Blackbirds in their first season and despite having the top pick in the league's expansion draft managed to lose an ALMOST league high 111 games.

The team didn't win its 20th game until July as it managed just 18 wins (18-57) through the end of June. I plan on writing a review of the year, and all it's bloody mess, as well as an off season "get to know the league" primer in the coming days.

Team by team rundown

  1. MLB 1992

In an effort to bring followers up to speed on MLB 1992 I will give you guys a rundown of the 24 clubs according to the seasons end power rankings, bottom to top excluding the Blackbirds until the end.
I'll note great years, prospects and a few details about each club.
  2. 24) Baltimore Blackbirds: …
  3. 23) Indianapolis Bluebirds: 50-112 45 GB in the AL Central Division. A huge market, rabid and loyal fans weren't nearly enough to see the leagues 2nd highest budget lose a league high 112 games. A fiscally controlling owner in 52-year-old Sam Morris who managed to remain hands-off all year long with winning expectations and a playoff birth as demands. Going to assume a ton of turnover. At or near the bottom in every offensive, defensive and pitching category. They lost star closer, Melvin Fuentes, after just 15 appearances to a torn UCL, and he's still 10-11 months away. SP's Atilio Couceiro and Ernesto Trevino lost 14 games apiece and the Bluebirds sported the league's first and only 20 game loser in Matt King 7-20 5.26. The only offensive player of note was 35 year old 3B David Rawson who hit .294-16-68 over 156 games. The all-star has 2 years remaining on his 3.6m annual deal. Their system ranks 24th and their top prospect is 22 year old Adam Hampton who his .275 in 36 AAA games. Their Rookie, AA and AAA teams all won their divisions.
  4. 22) New York Bombers: 64-98 35 GB in the AL Eastern Division. When your closer is 13-12 with 28 Saves and 10 blown saves you know there are holes to fill. 22-year-old RP Curt Holmes sported a 2.27 ERA with a 1.09 WHIP and 93 K's in 91.1 IP. The AL's 2nd best defense could not offset a next to last offense in runs scored and a bottom of the heap pitching staff with 4 starters losing 11+ games. 28-year-old LF Jorge Calvo was the lone bright spot hitting .305-3-60 in 146 games. The 23rd payroll is going to need to get a bump and their scouting system has them as the 10th best organization in the minors. Their Short Season Smyrna team won their division but their 73-71 AAA Middletown club was their only other minor league team above .500. CF Casey Willard hit .286/.360/.543 in 48 AA games as the league's 7th best prospect. He's 22.
  5. 21) Los Angeles Reapers: 62-100 38 GB in the NL West. 32-year-old all-star Chris O'Cain (.308-14-84) and 26-year-old Catcher Joe Peek (.310-2-48) were the lone offensive bright spots while 23-year-old Hector Piane went 15-14 3.91 over 33 starts and 244 IP as the leagues 16th ranked prospect. Their league-worst offense has some enormous holes to fill. They had the league's 9th payroll, insanely passionate and loyal fans in a huge market. They're rebuilding and have the games 9th ranked system. Top prospect (#8) 19 year old CF Ryan Olson hit .314 in 12 AA games after being taken 3rd overall in the June draft from Hamilton HS in Arizona.
  6. 20) Detroit Maulers: 68-94 31 GB in the AL East. Last in the AL in runs, and 10th or lower in most every other offensive category explains a team leader with 18 HR (James Ogelsby) and a team leader with 73 RBI (Cory Roberts). 21 year old Closer David Aguirre (#67 prospect) went 9-14 30-37 SV 3.36 ERA over 77.2 IP with 90 K's. 41 year old Dave Kaszuba (10-8 3.83) 28 year old Ricky Saavedra (9-11 4.07) and 38 year old Marc Eilders (11-14 3.96) held their own while 32 year old Jeremy Oser went 5-18 5.29 in a nightmare season. Their top ranked prospect (#14) Joe McRoberts was the 7th overall pick in the June draft out of Thousand Oaks HS in California. He hit .388/.440/.694 in 37 games of A Ball and .267/.359/.452 in 27 games in AA. Their system is ranked 17th overall.
  7. 19) Portland Bandits: 79-83 17 GB in the AL West. Their starters ranked 5th in ERA they were 3rd in HR's but played in one of the leagues most challenging divisions. Led by 36 year old star LF Eric Hamilton (.310-25-78) and 32 year old CF Manny Diaz (.257-23-80) They also featured the potential Koufax winner in lefty Josh Ott as the 40 year old went 19-9 2.20. 39 year old Paul Seidel (8-16 4.32) 26 year old Travis Mosley (5-4 4.54 after being acquired 8-17 5.00 overall) and 29 year old Alex de Leon (9-10 3.91) couldn't back up Ott's 19 win season. 21 year old John “Freeze” Keeling led the league with 72 appearances, saving 37 and going 9-8 2.34 over 100 innings with 108 punchouts. The leagues 48th ranked prospect is under team control for another 5 years. Portland had the leagues highest budget (40 million) and the games 2nd highest payroll (29.2 million) to get their “win now” mentality for an astronomical fan base that is one of the games best. They drew just over 3 million to rank 3rd in the league. They have the games 12th ranked system led by #11 prospect 19 year old CF Sean Skinner. He was taken 4th overall in June out of Rio Vista HS and he made it to AAA by years end. He hit .284/.371/.608 in A Ball. .291/.362/.602 in AA and .306/.354/.514 in 16 AAA games. All told he hit 24 HR's and drove in 74 in 85 minor league games.
  8. 18) Brooklyn Blackhearts: 69-93 31 GB in the NL East. Last in the NL in runs (558) and near the bottom in most pitching categories. They still managed to finish 18 games ahead of us. They lost 30 year old rotation anchor Fernando Felix on the final day of spring to a torn rotator. One of their, and the leagues, bright new stories was 22 year old Eddie Vaughn. Drafted in the 3rd round (63rd overall) out of the University of Illinois the righty went 7-5 2.93 over 20 starts and 135.1 IP to rank #47 on the top prospect board. 28-year-old 1B Martin King was their only .300 hitter (.307-13-77) and the top 6 in their lineup all hit 10+ HRs. Owner Frank Mormon is a demanding man who will spend money but his priority is profit and he has middling expectations. Their system ranks 19th in the game with top prospect (#24) 20-year-old CF Adam Dorr taken 15th overall in June mashing his way to AA at season's end.
  9. 17) Tucson Suns: 77-85 23 GB in the NL West. An offense ranked 9th in runs led by all-star SS Chris Curtis (.296-21-69) with a solid bullpen wasn't enough to get them to .500 much less catch the eventual world champion Apostles. The league's 11th best prospect 1B Will Marquardt hit .288-18-83 over 161 games and figures to be a perennial all-star. 21-year-old Dennis Weaver was the Sun's 2nd pick in the expansion draft and he went 15-16 in a league high 34 starts throwing 242.1 IP while striking out 180. He walked 76. They were a bubble team at the deadline and snagged 38 year old RP Alex Vargas from Memphis after an injury riddled pen began to struggle. He and 23 year old Khalil Duncan went a combined 9-8 with 36 Saves and a 2.12 ERA. They have the games 5th ranked system and feature 5 players ranked in the top 25. 1B Will Marquardt (11) SP Jose Gamboa (18) SP Ryan Ingoldsby (19) RF Logan Ellefsen (21) and SP Dennis Weaver (22). Gamboa was taken in the 10th round of the expansion draft, Ingoldsby in the 2nd round (26th overall) of the June draft out of ASU, Ellefson in the 8th round of the expansion draft.
  10. 16) Washington Navigators: 74-88 25 GB in the AL East. They scored 688 runs, good for 5th in the league but an 11th ranked rotation and 9th ranked bullpen offset the offense. I guess a 2nd place finish is worth noting, but not when it's 25 games back. 32-year-old 1BMatt Walker hit .271 and led the team with 22 HRs and 102 RBI's. The staff featured 2 10 game-winners in 27-year-old Matt Fann (10-9 3.28) 21-year-old Sal Castro (13-12 4.22) and 22-year-old Josh Campbell (14-11 5.67). Fann was the 6th overall pick in the inaugural draft. Castro is the leagues 69th ranked prospect and Campbell is the leagues 85th ranked rookie. Their system ranks 8th in the game with #10 prospect 1B Andy Voss who was taken 6th overall in June out of Florida Atlantic. He mashed in AAA to the tune of .394/.535/.803 hitting 30 HR's and driving in 95 in just 73 games while striking out just 27 times.
  11. 15) Columbus Chargers: 80-82 20 GB in the NL East. Had the leagues 2nd ranked pen led by closer Roberto Montoya. The 29 year old lefty went 6-8 2.20 with a league leading 42 (in 47 chances) saves in a league leading 75 appearances striking out 121 and walking just 20 in 98 IP to a 0.96 WHIP. He will be a free agent this winter. They drew 2.7 million, 6th in the game, and had the 4th highest budget and payroll for a massive fanbase that is as rabid as they are loyal. Their biggest concern? A system ranked 23rd out of 24 teams and just 4 players ranked in the games top 200 prospects with their highest being 19 year old SP Eric Carlson at 39. Carlson was their 2nd pick out of HS and 10 innings into the season tore a back muscle and was lost for the year.
  12. 14) Sacramento Corsairs: 79-83 21 GB in the NL West. Hit a league-high 158 home runs but couldn't overcome injuries to 3 SP's and an average bullpen. 22-year-old closer Jim Cohn had a great season (7-9 32 SV 2.02 ERA). 23-year-old CF Evan Lazenby (27) 23-year-old 1B Ben O'Donnell and 29-year-old LF Bryan Hill hit 3-4-5 and hit 74 HR while driving in 237 combined runs. The games #15 prospect SS Eduardo Morales stole 40 bases in the leadoff role but managed just a .254 OBP. At 24 scouts still say he has room to improve. His defense is elite. They drew the 15th most fans (2.058m) with the 14th ranked payroll. Sean Flores has a tight purse and has profit as his only real motive in owning the club. The game's 4th ranked system also features the game's top-ranked prospect in SP Juan Martinez. The 26-year-old was 12-8 4.78 in 29 AAA starts. Ben O'Donnell is ranked 10th, Morales 15th, and 19-year-old LF Sean King 29th.
  13. 13) San Francisco Panners: 82-80 14 GB in the AL West. 21-year-old 2B Eric Huber hit .321-15-74 with a slash line of .321/.384/.483 stealing 41 bases to go with 34 2B's and a league-leading 7.8 WAR. He was the 35th ranked prospect entering the season. SS Danny Rodriguez was the game's #19 prospect and all he did was hit .337-4-59 with an AL-best 203 hits, a slash line of .337/.370/.427 with 30 2B's 10 SB and a 6.8 WAR. They are the best up the middle combo in the game and both figure to win their share of Gold Gloves. They hit just 89 HRs. Their 1st overall pick in the inaugural draft was 21 year old Jeff Stapp. Ranked the #5 prospect he went 14-15 3.77 over 239 IP with a 1.21 WHIP. 19-year-old Mike Day comes in at #4 after a 5-6 4.17 season in Rookie ball at Wasilla. Their June Draft 1st rounder P Andy Blankenship is ranked 13th overall after a 7-4 3.88 year as Short Season Sitka. They have the leagues 3rd ranked system with 4 top 25 players, 7 top 50 and an astonishing 20 in the top 200.
  14. 12) Milwaukee Ice Wolves: 89-74 winner of tie breaking game to play the WC play in game. Battled some serious injuries to their staff as SP Abraham Beltran ruptured a disk in his back 18 starts into the year. The 34 year old was 11-3 2.62 at the time he was out. He is supposed to be ready by camp. Bullpen injuries forced their hand as they dealt for Reaper closer Jeff Chandler at the deadline. The 31 year old went 3-1 1.61 with 4 saves to compliment star closer Jessie Anderson. The 26 year old had a monster year. Saving 40 games to a 1.14 ERA with 121 punchouts in just 87 IP. They ranked 1st in SP ERA with 33-year-old Andres Castillo (11-13 3.80) 35-year-old Ricky Beyer (4-3 3.07) 25-year-old Kevin Robinson (11-6 3.18) 29-year-old Arturo Corchado (5-3 3.22 after being acquired from Tucson (5-11 4.42 at Tucson) and 27-year-old Bobby Adams (15-14 3.44). They were 4th in HR's (113) and their offense was jump-started by RF Matt Little (.297/.367/.399). The all-star scored 104 runs, had 181 hits and led the league with 89 SB's (89-130). They drew 3.14 million to rank 2nd in attendance while sporting the league's 3rd highest payroll. Their 15th ranked farm system has one potential superstar in 5th ranked pitcher 19-year-old Ben Zagorski who they selected 16th overall this year out of Archbishop Moeller HS. He struggled mightily in AA (2-7 7.09) but got a late-season call up and went 8 strong in his lone AAA start.
  15. 11) Chicago Bay Bears: 90-72 4 GB in the NL Central. Won the wild card finishing 2 games ahead of Memphis, then lost to Memphis 5-0 in the WC game. 1B Pablo Zuniga finished April hitting .500 and was hitting .457 at the end of May. He'd finish at .331-13-92 with a slash line of .331/.370/.453, make the all star team and lead the 2nd best hitting team in the NL in Avg and have a league leading 210 hits. RF Eli De La Rosa hit .324 while amassing exactly 200 hits, stealing 48 bases and hitting 29 2B's. Ageless wonder AJ Gardner drummed up a .309 season at age 40 playing LF. The team hit just 66 HRs. 25-year-old Alvin Diaz (16-12 3.07) 41-year-old Manny Lopez (17-6 3.01) 36-year-old Chris Kahn (10-11 3.80) 27-year-old Jesse Hicks (12-11 4.30) fronted the leagues 3rd best rotation while 26-year-old Joe Morgan went 4-5 with 32 Saves and a 1.86 ERA. They drew 3.031 million, good for 4th, and sported a 23.7 million payroll, ranking 5th. Their farm system is ranked 21st with just one top 30 player. 20-year-old 2B Felix Balderas was their 1st pick (10th overall) out of Iowa Western JUCO. He had a fantastic season hitting .388/.497/.679 for a 1.176 OPS in 66 AA games. Hammering 13 2B 19 HR and driving in 51 while sporting a 47/36 BB/K ratio.
  16. 10) Fort Worth Aviators: 82-80 12 GB in the NL Central. All 4 teams finished above .500 in this division with San Antonio winning 94, Chicago 90, Memphis 88. The Aviators stole a league best 221 bases. OF Prospect Eric Lawson hit .373/.396/.481 in 185 at bats after an early season broken finger forced him to miss 5 weeks. 34 year old DH Abel Robinson led the team in Avg (.267) HR (24) and RBI's (87). Injuries to SP Josh Underwood (rotator cuff) and 25 year old Steve Olander (torn meniscus) pushed 20 year old prospect (#30) Taylor Brace into a rotation role and he responded going 13-15 3.72 over 227 Innings. 26 year old Corey Craig (11-6 2.80) sat atop the rotation and 27 year old Mike Proctor saved 33 games with a miniscule 1.16 ERA over 77 innings. Fort Worth ranks just 14th in prospect rankings with 3B Jon Moore (20 years old, #16) hitting .369/.459/.824 in 72 AAA games with an astounding 36 HR's and 91 RBIs the former Texas Longhorn figures to be anchoring the hot corner for years to come in Texas.
  17. 9) Memphis Sounds: 88-74 6 GB in the NL Central. Won a tie-breaking game to get to the WC game and then beat Chicago in that game. Swept in the Division Series by the eventual World Champion Apostles 3-0. 739 runs (2nd) 199 SB (2nd) 127 HR (6th), 4th in AVG, OPS WAR, wOBA, and 5th in OBP. SP ERA of 3.82 (4th) helped offset a porous defense. 23-year-old 3B Eric Zawistowski (.310/.364/.482 17 HR 889 RBI) 34-year-old RF Oscar Jimenez (.309/.348/.511 30 HR (led the league) and 121 RBI's (also led the league) 25-year-old LF Franklin Canales (.295/.399/.488 19 HR 82 RBI) and leadoff hitter 2B Scott Catton 95 runs and 67 SB's led the offense. Memphis was crushed by injuries to THREE of its closers. Hugh Brigatti made 4 appearances before a rotator cuff issue sidelined him for the year. 22 year old Danny Monger 20 Saves, 1.71 tore his meniscus, 29 yer old Johnny Alley 7-5 11 Saves 2.13 ERA fractured a wrist and tore a rib cage muscle. 23 year old Ben Bellinger went 16-10 3.04 JUCO draftee Jason Lee (2nd round) came out of the draft and after a few AAA starts proceeded to go 9-2 2.77 over 16 starts. He's just 19 years old. 24 year old Odemar Kosters went 15-7 3.88, 25 year old Josh Helling went 12-11 4.17. The Sounds have the leagues 22nd ranked budget and payroll and drew just under 2 million (1.992) for 17th in the league. They have the leagues 6th ranked farm system led by the games #2 prospect in Catcher Dan Shores. The 22-year-old entered the season at #2 and promptly hit .290/.362/.426 with 36 2B, 11 HR 59 RBI 62 K's while nabbing 34.4% of would-be base stealers.
  18. 8) San Antonio Drillers: 94-68 winners of the NL Central. Beat Philly 3-1 in the Division Series before being swept 4-0 by eventual champions San Diego. 1st in Avg (.294) OBA (.342) and OPS (.752) with a rotation ranking 2nd in ERA and the league's top defense (.713 Deff). An offense led by batting champion Joe Fairclough. The 25-year-old OF hit .342 with 32 doubles, a league-leading 12 3B's, and 60 SB's (though CS 44 times). 3B Greg Abromatis (.329/.371/.449 12 HR 81 RBI) Sean Kenner (1B, 21 years old) hit .312/.339/.424 with 9 HR 52 RBI) 25 year old 1BAndy Newman his 25 HR with a team-leading 87 RBI's. The staff was led by likely Koufax winner Brennan Wigent. The 23-year-old went 19-5 1.72 over 215 IP with 181 K's. 25 year old Tony Garcia (11-13 4.25) 27 year old Ron Freeburg (13-11 3.56) and 28 year old Jordan Cabrera (11-12 4.59) rounded out a rotation that tried to go with 4 as often as possible. 33 year old Dan Keenan went 4-7 17 Saves with a 1.55 ERA and 27 year old Dan Peabody came up from AAA to go 3-5 22 Saves with a 2.42 ERA. Their 18th ranked system doesn't feature a top 20 prospect but does have 17 youngsters in the top 200.
  19. 7) Houston Spitfires: 95-67 winners of the AL Central, beaten by El Paso 3-1 in the Division Series. One of, if not the best offense in baseball. Led the AL in Runs (849) Avg (.297) OBP (.348) OPS (.776) WAR (39.1) wOBA (.341) SB (248). All that was needed to offset a rotation ranked 10th and bullpen ranked 7th. All-Star Edwin Lopez hit .342/..390/.491 with 202 hits 14 Hrs and 96 RBI's. The 29-year-old LF won the batting title, also hitting 44 2B's. 39-year-old DH Leonel Marin hit a team-leading 25 HR's and also paced the Spitfires with 104 RBI's. 23-year-old RF John Anderson led the league in At Bats (652) Runs (1-5) 3B (12) while stealing 75 of 98 bases. Houston sports the game's top-ranked system as well as the top-ranked prospect. 24-year-old Sal Pla was the 5th overall selection in the expansion draft. He was hampered by a bad leg all spring long and missed some time here and there before tearing his meniscus in late May forcing him out until late in the year. In 9 starts he went 3-2 4.44 and was given a post-season start against El Paso where he was beaten 2-1. SP Enrique Lopez was 13-9 5.19 over 196 IP and is the game's #4 ranked prospect. Their top pick in June, 2B Tom Spurling out of LSU is the #6 prospect and went off at AAA Boise after signing. He hit .407/.484/.602 with 19 2B 9 HR 44 RBI 37 BB 13 K and was 25-25 in SB's. Clearly expected to be at 2B opening day next year. #32 ranked Prospect closer DC Hester went 4-8 with 41 Saves and a 1.91 ERA over 70 games. In 89 IP he surrendered just 60 hits while fanning 126.
  20. 6) San Jose Barracudas: 88-75 8.5 GB in the AL West. Lost a tie-breaking game for the right to play in the WC game. One of the league's worst offenses offset by the game's best pitching staff. Their 107 HR's ranked 7th, and they finished 11th or worse in every other meaningful offensive category. This was made possible by the game's best staff. 1st in RA (604) Bullpen ERA (2.17) FIP, WAR, and 2nd in SP ERA (3.55). 26-year-old Ricardo de Leon (17-13 2.89) 28-year-old Keith Shoemaker (14-11 3.45) 23-year-old Phil Hiller (9-11 4.84) and the 24th pick in the June Draft University of Houston's Travis Ajeti (7-7 3.58 in 17 GS) were the stalwarts. Ajeti is the game's #15 prospect. 25-year-old All-Star Joel Lemmon went 6-3 with 40 saves and a microscopic 1.04 ERA over 95.1 IP. Giving up just 41 hits and 22 BB for a 0.66 WHIP while fanning 135. Their system is ranked 11th overall with 4 players in the top 50. 20-year-old 3B Adrian Brittingham hit .276/.359/.458 with 19 HR and a team-best 93 RBI's.
  21. 5) Dallas Rustlers: 89-73 6 GB in the AL Central. Beat Milwaukee in the WC game then lost 3-2 to Charlotte in the Division Series. A top 5 offense and pitching staff. Their 151 HR's were 2nd in the AL. 36 year old OF Fiorello Corte paced the offense hitting .316/.374/.486 with 19 HR's and 82 RBI's. 29-year-old 2B Brian Clayton led the team with 27 HRs and RBI's with 83. Their staff featured 4 12+ game winners with 33-year-old Matt Roberts (18-8 2.98) 24-year-old Joey Hemstreet (15-12 3.61) 31-year-old John Trimble (13-6 3.73) and 36-year-old Ryan Russell (12-16 4.60) backed by 31-year-old closer TJ Nichols 50 saves and 1.57 ERA. The Rustlers sport the game's largest payroll, 2nd largest budget, and led the league in attendance at 3.224 million. Their 20th ranked farm system is led by their 1st and 2nd round picks from the June Draft. #23 OF George Sanford and #43 OF Aaron Hawker.
  22. 4) El Paso Armadillos: 96-66 winners of the AL West. Advanced to the 1992 World Series and were beaten in 7 games by San Diego. Pretty balanced club. Ranked 2nd to 4th in most offensive categories, same with pitching. Didn't lead the league in anything. 26 year old 3B Matt Underwood (who would go on to win the WS MVP despite them losing in 7 games) anchored the offense hitting .287/.329/.479 15 HR's 111 RBI's). The team hit just 92 HR's (10th) but their lineup was both solid and deep with 31 year old 2B Carlos Casanova leading the team at .308 and 31 year old LF Kyle Blanton hitting .293 and stealing 36 bases. The Armadillos skirted the injury bug all year long finishing the season with not a single player at any level on the DL. SP Gregg Stanford (27) went 15-9 3.28, Francisco Rodriguez (27) was 14-13 3.35 Jose Rumbo (35) was 6-3 3.59 after being acquired from LA (he finished 10-12 4.05) and 27-year-old Ryan Miller closed things outgoing 5-3 1.78 with a league-leading 43 Saves and a 118/18 K/BB ratio in just 81 IP. El Paso acquired Brooklyn Blackheart closer Kazuo Ogasawara (27) who was 3-8 24 Saves 3.10 before coming over and he went 3-0 with 1 save and a 1.29 ERA in a setup role. Their 15th ranked farm system is headed by former ASU Sun Devil stand out and 1992 #1 (19th overall) pick Joel Harrison who after a short stint in AAA was called up and went 7-3 2.43 over 13 GS and 92.2 IP. Harrison is the leagues 12th rated prospect.
  23. 3) San Diego Apostles: 100-62 winners of the NL West, and the World Series. Took the first two rounds without losing a game and then were taken to a game 7 by El Paso. A very good offense topped by the games best rotation the Apostles skirted late season disaster whenb closer Jose Fernandez (28) went down with a bad shoulder. He was 1-2 32 Saves 2.33 at the time. A patched up pen backed up Al Scott (29) 19-7 2.50 Mike Miley (33) 16-10 2.89 Kevin Robinson (27) 12-10 2.57 Bill Sanchez 10-5 1 SV 4.41. Jamal Smith (36) was lost in July to a torn tendon and was 10-5 3.11 at the time. 27 year old 1B Gerardo Torres paced the offense with a .319-27-94 campaign, all team highs. SS Omar Catano (27) hit 24 HR's, driving in 88 with a .340 OBP. 25 year old OF Jordane Vignal stole 80 bases, led the league with 109 runs and capped the season off winning the Division Series, and LCS MVP awards. Their payroll is 8th and they drew 2.92 million (5th). They're a bit thin on the farm with the games 22nd ranked system headed by 9th overall pick out of Lowell HS CF John Sutton at 26.
  24. 2) Philadelphia Keystones: 100-62 winners of the NL East. Beaten 3-1 in the Division Series by San Antonio. A league-best 774 runs to go with 144 HR's (3rd) the league's best bullpen and a solid rotation. 31-year-old LF Brooks Graves hit .334-17-95 with Catcher Dwayne Owens hitting .323-7-71 to lead the offense. DH Matt Henderson (31) led the team with 29 HRs. The rotation was led by Giovani Corpus (28) who went 15-9 3.25. 37-year-old Chaz Fuhrman was 11-6 3.73 after being acquired from LA. 22-year-old Gabe Mayfield (5-2 3.81) had his season end in late May with a shoulder injury. 22 year old Israel Garcia had a season for the ages. The 12th ranked prospect went 9-3 with 41 Saves and a 1.21 ERA fanning 159 to just 22 walks in 89.1 IP. His 7.2 WAR led all pitchers.
  25. 1) Charlotte Knights: 99-63 winners of the AL East. Beat Dallas 3-2 in the Division Series before dropping the LCS 4-2 to El Paso. A league high 153 HR's, 801 runs (2nd) .343 OBP (2nd) to go with a solid defense and good pitching. The top 4 in the lineup jeff Primeau (22) .324/.395/.485 14 HR 68 RBI 43 SB at 3B, Gareth Cheadle (36) .308/.350/.464 with 13 HR 75 RBI in left, 27 year old Ian Shepherd in RF hit .302/.388/.519 with 28 HR and 108 RBI (both team highs) and in the cleanup spot 33 year old OF/DH Roger Gonzalez hit .297/.378/.476 with 23 HR and 95 RBI. 22 year old star in the making Jason Burke was 17-10 3.12 as the games #17 prospect. Jason Hamm (22) went 15-5 3.74, Jose Sans (22) was 12-9 4.04 and Carlos Borque (24) was 10-9 5.19 after his early season callup. 37 year old closer Alfredo Hermosillo saved 40 games with a 1.54 ERA fanning 115 in just 93.2 IP. Their system is ranked 7th with 16 players ranked in the top 200. 5 of their top 6 are on their MLB roster already with SS Alex Rodriguez (21) hitting .275/.353/.397 at #7 topping the list.

Baltimore Blackbirds

Where to begin? How about the beginning?
Given the 1st overall draft pick in the inaugural draft (I usually random until I get a top 5 pick anyway, but this happened organically which was cool) and anyone that has followed any of my past clubs knows what position I am most likely going with on this pick.
25-year-old RHP Antonio Quezada was the unanimous pick. Mid to high 90's with 4++ pitches who keeps the ball on the ground. Our scouts had him at 15+ (1-20 scale) on Stuff, Movement, and Command. His changeup is one of the games best and he features a forkball and cutter to go with the heavy FB.
He would end up being the team's lone all-star representative and then have 2 DL stints that would limit him to 24 starts. He went 8-9 3.28 over 162 IP with 127 K's, 38 BB, and 166 hits allowed. Actually concerned he may be a health risk. He ends the season with 2 years 15 days of service so we'll have 4 more seasons of control.
Our best all-around player would be drafted next. 1B/3B CJ Holder. A 23-year-old RH hitting corner IF with above-average D at third and exceptional/elite skills at first. His bat was legit. He hit .311/.344/.421 with 200 hits, 30 2B, 13 HR driving in 65 with 72 K's, and 36 walks in 157 games. The problem? He's a non-hustling asshole. Team chemistry was a nightmare all year long, the clubhouse never settled in and there was infighting from spring training on. Almost every issue had this guy at the center of the problem, and being the problem. He's a legit HOF bat that I will quietly work my hard to trade this winter. This team has zero leadership, and no one to take control in the clubhouse and it was an enormous issue all season long. To move forward I need to strike a deal that brings me an “equal” talent back and/or a bevy of young high ceiling prospects, or both.
Here is a look at the final standings along with our statistical rankings. Those two go together like fish and water. This team did not win their 20th game until July!
The bullpen was horrid, 24 Saves 19 Blown. A ton of early-season games were lost after the 7th, and those losses are the worst on a young new team.
As you can see, when you lose 111 games there isn't one stat to point to. They all pretty much stink. Valdez opened the season closing and when that went awry Kim came on and did a decent job after being called up. The rotation, according to our scouts, is loaded with talent. I won't tamper much (unless a blockbuster comes along) with the starters but I will work hard to rebuild the bullpen.
Bayless (21) is ranked as the league's 18th best prospect and our scouts think he's a top of the rotation arm. The horrid defense and a BABIP of .335 say they could be right. Elias is a stud as well. After that, there's room for more arms as the prospects develop.

Attachment 814213
“Develop” leads to this picture. As you can see our scouting, at least what BBTN thinks, has absolutely nailed it. The league's 2nd ranked system nets 8 top 50 prospects 12 top 75, and a whopping 20 of the top 200!
Elijah Raymond was the 1st overall pick in the June Draft and went Rookie, Short-Season to A ball and never stopped hitting. Deshawn Mack is a couple of years off but a top of the rotation arm for sure. Brian Corbett was taken in the 3rd round this year and made it to the show in just 2 months, getting a September call up and giving me no reason to think he won't be the opening day LF next year. Grimaldo, Suazo, and Ricky Preciado had horrible seasons but the 1st two are way too young to be stressed about. Preciado was atrocious. He had to get hot in August to creep over the Mendoza line. I think the scouts (who say he's a “14” power guy) missed.

Attachment 814214
On the defensive front some very telling numbers. They say you build from behind the plate up the middle of the diamond. After you leave home plate on this team it becomes cringe-worthy. With the exception of Montejo at Short, the defense is absolutely horrid. Holder may win a gold glove but beyond him and the catching, our defense was a huge liability and is an enormous hole to fill. Preciado's 23 errors to go with ZR of -4.6 in LF, -5.1 in CF, and an astonishing .-12.2 in right! All three have to change or drastically improve. The cost not just on winning and losing but the extra cost on the pitching staff will end careers.

There will be major work done across the board.

Attachment 814215
Looking into the offensive numbers and using RC27 you'll see Holder with a solid season and no one else. Holder's “solid” is at the lower end of what many consider solid.
And that solid is on a team in which not a single player had an RC of 100 (league average) or better. Looking at the early season and my thoughts that this would be an outstanding offense means I missed on a grand scale. (though using 1992 as my stat mark might be why I missed).

When factoring in league and park modifiers you'll note 1 “above average' season, and 5 average with half the roster below average or worse. All numbers to be considered when looking to build a championship team through trades and signings this winter.

Needless to say, I've managed to pick a team, draft 1st twice, and end the year with a club at the very bottom of the ladder. A truer rebuild I've never had!!!

I am going to resign as Manager and retain the GM position, passing most control in-game to the manager.

Salary Arbitration isn't a big deal this winter in that sums, win or lose, aren't organization changing or worrisome. (Though we did end up going 7-0)

gehrig38 09-14-2021 05:28 PM

Off season goals

  • 1) Trade CJ Holder for a 5-star talent + a clubhouse presence.
  • 2) Bring in some leadership
  • 3) Trade any/all unhappy players or players who are disruptive.
  • 4) Add more prospects/picks to an already good minor league team
  • 5) Remake the entire bullpen through trades or free agency
  • 6) Hire a manager who can manage a clubhouse

Baltimore blackbirds 1992-93 offseason

One important note. The league GMs have agreed to raise the active roster limit from 25 to 27 players starting in the 1993 season. This will likely mean I will go to an 8 man bullpen.

1992 WINTER MEETINGS

12/15/92
Baltimore sends Holder to New York in 7 player deal.

Fans of the last place Blackbirds showed up in droves at the club's front office to voice their displeasure at the 111 loss teams announcement they'd traded star 1B CJ Holder to the New York Bombers in the winters first blockbuster.
Baltimore packaged the unhappy and reportedly disruptive star with 1B power prospect Matt Lampkin, SP prospect Antonio Cruz as well as their 1993 4th round draft choice to New York and received star closer Matt Holmes, minor league SS prospect Dave Rodriguez, 26-year-old shut down reliever Jordan McGraw, minor league C prospect Amari Bryant, 180K in cash and the Bombers 1993 2nd round draft choice.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Holder goes and the pen revamp begins. Holmes (23, 13-12 28 SV 2.27 93/38 K/BB in 91.1 IP) will be the 1st piece of what I hope ends up a completely redone bullpen full of power arms who can throw strikes. Rodriguez (20 and the games #60 ranked prospect) is a middle IF defensive whiz who will be good enough defensively to offset a limited offensive upside. McGraw (26) fractured his elbow in spring training but returned in September throwing 11.2 innings with 15 K's and 0 BB's. He's an arbitration-eligible RH power arm as well as a clubhouse leader. Bryant was an 8th round pick who had a monster rookie league season (.343/.444/.629 in 55 games) that we plucked out late in this deal. The cash and pick were nice adds.

12/16/92
Cherry dealt to Memphis.
The Blackbirds have sent 23-year-old RP Jake Cherry to the Memphis Sounds for 23 year old OF Bettino Rivera. The teams also exchanged draft choices, with the Birds sending their 1993 7th and 9th round choices in exchange for the Sounds 1993 4th round pick.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Next to Holder Cherry was the worst offender in the nightmare that was the 1992 Blackbirds clubhouse. Involved in multiple altercations he clearly didn't understand what being a part of a team meant nor could his performance (1-2 1 SV 2.88 ERA in 42 G 56.1 IP 51 K) ever overshadow his disruptive influence. Bettino is a legit 4th or 5th OF who plays all 3 spots and has track star speed as a calling card. Immense range and is one of the game's best bunters he's a team-first player and just 24.

12/16/92
LA, Baltimore make a deal
Not 20 minutes after the announcement they'd dealt RP Jake Cherry GM Curt Schilling was at the podium again. This time to announce the Blackbirds had reached an agreement with the LA Reapers to send 22 year old OF Josh Schlachter, minor league OF prospect Brian Foster, their 1993 4th round pick just acquired from Memphis, and receive 25-year old C Robert Serrano and LA's 3rd round pick in the upcoming June Draft.

BEHIND THE SCENES
This was more of a numbers trade. Schlachter was in a crowded OF and one of the guys who was more of a defensive liability than his bat would allow. Serrano is just 25, a max-effort guy, and a decent defender. The organization is barren behind the plate and that's something that needs to be addressed now.

12/17/92
Baltimore opens the final day of the Winter Meetings with a pair of trades
The Blackbirds have been the “Belle of the Ball” at the 92 Winter Meetings. Seemingly deserving of their own podium to announce the bevy of moves, trades and signings they've made.
Today they announced two deals.
The first, and actually the 2nd deal with LA in the past 24 hours, was to send SP Jon Perez and minor league SP prospect Cory Smith to the Reapers for defensive whiz Jesus Franco and the Reapers 4th rounder, dealt TO LA just a day earlier. LA received the Birds 1993 8th rounder as well.

The other deal announced was a minor transaction in which Baltimore sent P prospect Marcus Clark to Portland in exchange for minor league 1B Noah Booker.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Perez (4-15 5.56 in 20 GS 121.1 IP 142 H 73 K) has legit potential as a 3 or 4, but most likely a 5 on a good team. His changeup is one of the games best but he has major problems missing barrels. His command is decent to a tad above average but not nearly good enough for someone who allows so many balls in play. Franco is across the board a gold glove caliber defender at 3 different positions in the infield.
The Clark trade was made to clear a roster spot on the active roster.

12/28/92
December 28th will likely be a day many point to as the beginning of the new Baltimore BlackBirds. The team reaches terms with Suzuki.
One of the prizes on this winter's International Free Agent market, middle IF Sawao “The Iguana” Suzuki has agreed to terms on a 4 year 9.6 million dollar contract with the Baltimore Blackbirds. The Japanese star was swarmed by Japanese Media at the press conference. Baltimore, in its continuing effort to remake a league worst 111 loss team, has brought in a very large Japanese fan base who will follow Suzuki's every move. The 5'11” 22 year old RHH has extreme power and according to Baltimore scouts still has room to grow in every offensive and defensive category teams could hope for. A very solid defender he can play SS and 2B equally well. He is also a legit threat to steal 25+ bases and has, according to many baseball insiders, an extremely high baseball IQ.

Baltimore snags star Closer Miller, 8.22M over 6 years
The press conference to announce the Suzuki signing wasn't over at that point. Two more very significant announcements were to come.
The second was to announce the club had managed to convince star closer and the 1992 Bruce Sutter Award winner Ryan Miller had agreed to a 6 year deal with the team.
Miller will receive 8.225 million over the 6 years with the final seasons 1.5 million being part of a player option. An otherworldly 1992 season featured a 5-3 43 SV 1.78 ERA top line. In 81 IP Miller fanned 118, walked just 18, and yielded just 51 hits.

Veteran 1B Hernandez agrees to terms with Baltimore
36-year-old 1B Ricky Hernandez, a 1992 All-Star and the AL Silver Slugger at 1B agreed to a 3 year 6.9 million dollar contract with the Blackbirds today. The 2.5 million third year comes as a player option. Hernandez slash line .289/.367/.469 went with 22 HR and 68 RBI's. The club sought his services as much for “his locker room presence” as much as his on the field ability. While certainly on the 'back 9” of a great career the veteran still brings a thunderous middle of the order bat from the left side that will help this team forget the 1992 season ever happened.

BEHIND THE SCENES
The International market was actually quite ripe with prospects this winter. Most of them from Japan's major leagues. I targeted Suzuki from day 1 and was pretty relentless in pursuit of his talent as he's still improving and will provide stability to the middle of the diamond to go with a potential 40 homer bat and 30+ steal legs. The reaction was apparent after hearing season ticket sales jumped 12% within hours of the announcement.

The Miller signing wasn't done in a vacuum. Having already acquired 2 legit back-end arms this signing creates a 3-headed monster to close out games for the new manager. His leadership and game mentality will do nothing but make the guys in that bullpen better.

Hernandez 'replaces' Holder in most every meaningful way. While he is clearly not the offensive star CJ is and will be, he stabilizes a revamped clubhouse, brings a booming left handed bat, and at 6'7” 226 lbs he brings a lot more presence on the field.

Blackbirds deal twice, continue organization wide overhaul.
The Baltimore Blackbirds sent their opening day Closer, Martin Vega, to the Columbus Chargers for 26 year old C Melvin Cordova. Vega was recently bumped from the bullpen with the clubs multiple acquisitions and the team has made no bones about its dearth of catching up and down the ladder.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Clearing roster space and adding backstops. Cordova is an insurance piece who will likely be in AA or AAA all year barring a rash of injuries behind the plate. The bullpen spots are growing scarce as trades and signings have made it look like a completely different animal going into 1993.

Blackbirds send McGregor packing.
Baltimore, in announcing it's 5th and final move on the 28th, sent 1B/OF 23 year old Tim McGregor to the Portland Bandits for 28 year old SP Victor Ramirez and 24 year old SP Matt Curry.

BEHIND THEE SCENES
Same M-O here. Clearing roster space and adding depth. McGregor had a horrendous year (.163/.217/.277) but most scouts feel like, and we agree, it was more a lack of consistent at bats than anything. His defense is suspect at best but we all think he will hit down the road. Ramirez went a combined 12-8 3.24 over 29 GS and 169 IP in AAA for Brooklyn and Portland after a deadline deal sent him west. He's pitching depth should we need it. Curry spent most of 1992 in the bullpen in AAA going 4-7 15 SV 4.41 over 51 IP, 56 H 60 K and 17 BB. He'll get a shot to start in Knoxville this season.

Baltimore stuns the league, announces the signing of closer Jessie Anderson.

Given what GM Curt Schilling had already done this offseason the market for star closer Jessie Anderson didn't seem to have the Birds in it.
That was clearly not the case as they announced they'd reached a 5 year 6.75 million dollar deal with the hard throwing righty. The 27 year old will have his choice in year 5 as it will be in the form of a 1.5 million dollar player option.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Well, I said remake the pen, and I did. Anderson went 2-5 40 Saves with a 1.14 ERA over 87 IP. He fanned 121, walked 22, gave up just 2 HRs and a paltry 59 hits. I have a hard time seeing this pen be anything but the games best by a wide margin. Multiple late-game options for the manager and everyone a legitimate power arm who can close.

In a couple of minor deals, I sent OF Jorge Valles (.294/.358/.563 in 100 AAA games) to San Francisco for a Catcher and OF who will both likely be AAA guys.
Then I dealt 3B Jonathan Reyes, veteran Minor League IF Kelly Parker, a 4th rounder, to Milwaukee for a AAA arm and their 3rd rounder.

ABC. Always Be Closing

Wow! That is one serious overhaul. I'm not sure this won't feel like (and maybe be) a whole new team when you are done. That bullpen is going to be insane. I think the current adage of teams with the best lockdown bullpens are "the starter needs to give us 5-6 innings and we will take it from here" becomes "2-3" innings with your BP  I am joking of course but it's not far from the truth on some occasions I would guess. Those closers are no joke.

gehrig38 09-15-2021 09:43 PM

I hear ya. The pen has the potential to be record-breaking. My ONLY concern is egos. If they don't get in the way it's all good. All three back-end guys want to close....

1993 spring training

Well, certainly a different team on paper and on the field.
A winning spring, a calm, fun, quiet clubhouse and just one injury, though it was a big one. Jin-soo Kim goes down in the camps final week and will miss the season after having shoulder surgery. Luckily there is a ton of bullpen depth to alleviate the blow.

The net result of turning over this roster?
Season ticket projections estimate an 84% increase in sales, 64% increase in attendance per game, and a 125% increase in revenue per game.

Attachment 814509

Both Hernandez and Miller are faces of the game locally and internationally. Anderson, Quezada, and top prospect Elijah Raymond are all household names in the Baltimore area as well as rising stars on the national scene. We blew the league away in WAR added over the winter at 12.2 with the next closest team at 1.5!

Probably the most stunning news as we approach opening day 1993 is that last years AL MVP, OF Ian Shephard, remains unsigned! He and a few other star players are now trolling at almost 1/3rd of their initial asks this past winter, looking for a job.

Along those lines, 26 year old OF Nate “Hat” Jackson remains unsigned. The left-handed-hitting slugger broke his ankle early last year and then came back and sprained the same ankle on his rehab assignment. At years end he had a slash line of .222/.351/.349 in just 20 games. He's a monster talent. A corner OF who has 100 steal speed and instincts as well as a legitimate 3 hole bat with power. His ask is down to 1.3 million and we've decided to make a move, while at the same time quietly notifying GM's around the league that young Danny Parra is available.
One of the many calls inquiring on Parra was Milwaukee. They came to the table offering SP Ben Zagorski. Ben is rated as the game's #3 overall prospect as a 20-year-old. He was the 16th overall pick in June and went 14-7 3.07 at AA Athens.

Jackson, whom we assumed would be an easy sign, has turned out to be asking for more than we were led to believe and talks went back and forth with him refusing a 3-year deal. He wants just a single year at close to 2.5 million. We cannot afford that but I do not believe that will stop a potential Parra deal should it be worked out. Acquiring a young power arm with that much ceiling is something I do not believe I can pass up. I believe with the bevy of young OF prospects (including our #1 in Raymond) I can replace him.

Columbus stuns the league, inking two.
The Columbus Chargers are clearly in “win now” mode and they proved that today. Signing reigning AL Cy Young winner 40-year-old Josh Ott ((19-6 2.20) to a 2 year 6.3 million dollar deal and a member of the Apostles world series winning club, all-star, and silver slugger winner SS Omar Catano inked a 5-year deal to join them as well. The 27-year-old Catano was a catalyst in San Diego's drive to the series and Columbus now factors into everyone's post-season conversations.

Two other stars also inked deals prior to opening day. All-star and Silver Slugger winner Sergio Valero signed a 3 year 7.8 million dollar deal with a full no-trade clause to patrol CF for the Milwaukee Ice Wolves.
The Columbus deal was apparently in reaction to the news that Dallas continued its crazy off-season by inking former Columbus closer and Saves leader Roberto Montoya to a 1 year 2.6 million dollar deal.

I didn't expect our winter to fly under the radar, and it didn't. League prognosticators apparently think very highly of this rebuilt club, picking us to win the East by a large margin as well as getting huge seasons out of free-agent signings at 1B and in the pen. Going to have to watch Houston too, what a season they're supposed to have. Only team predicted to pass 900 runs. Sacramento as well.

Attachment 814510

Not only that, but the new prospect rankings are out. Our Japanese import shows up at #1! And Raymond “drops” to #3 but the club ranks first in the organization rankings for 1993 with the top two offensive prospects. Check out SF. They come in ranked 2nd and possess the games top two pitching prospects. Our top P prospects check in at 19 and 20 with Gonzalez being just 16 years old and working at our International Complex.

Attachment 814511

I am awaiting word from Ice Wolves GM Russ Para as the club boards the bus to head to the park for opening day. I'll keep the phone on vibrate....

OPENING DAY ROSTER 1993 Baltimore Blackbirds

Going to sim the way Orcin did. Play the 1st game of the series, and sim the rest. Allowing the manager I hired to make all decisions. I will put in a ton of work on individual strategy but allow the manager to do in-game stuff.

It's more control than I like to give up but I really want to stretch the legs on this game and see how much fun it can be.

Starting Rotation
1) Antonio Quezada (26 RHP) 1st overall pick in the league draft. 8-9 3.28 in 24 starts last year. (2 yr 19 days. Missed arbitration by 13 days this year. Making 117K). Ace of the staff. Should be a Cy Young contender annually. Some health concerns.
2) Enrique Elias (30 RHP) 4th round (96th overall) pick in the inaugural draft. 6-17 4.28 ERA over 33 GS and 208 IP. 1.31 WHIP and 140/53 K/BB ratio. (signed through 1995 at 1.9m annually). A team leader. 5 pitch mix with all 5 being elite. His FB and Curve are among the leagues best. He was a victim of a bad defense multiple times last year. He took the ball every time though.
3) Bob Bayless (22 RHP) 3rd round (49th overall) pick in the inaugural draft (noticing a theme?). One of the 10 best arms in the game. 9-15 4.72 over 32 starts 200.1 IP 247 H 116 K 62 BB. Needs to start missing more bats but also victimized by a horrid defense last season. He's a legit 1 or 2 on many teams. His only drawback? He's Canadian.... (1 year 4 days 112K)
4) John Reeves (23 RHP) 8th round (192nd overall) pick in the inaugural draft. 8-16 4.43 over 32 GS. 207.1 IP 220 H 106 K 76 BB. Another power arm who is more than ready to take on 230+ IP if he could miss a few more barrels. He's a solid 4 but also young enough to get better. (1 year 4 days 112K)
5) Coby Peters (22 RHP) 29th round (673rd overall) pick in the inaugural draft. Made 11 starts (1-5 4.76 56.2 IP 66 H 35 K 17 BB) before rupturing an elbow ligament. Returned for camp and made the team as the 5th starter. His control will keep him from every winning consistently or holding down a top of the rotation spot. He's a big time clubhouse presence. Bullpen
Going to open the season with 8 guys in the pen. Once I get a feel for Manager Eric McCammonds tendencies and bench usage I can adjust if need be.

INFIELD
C – Ramon Contreras (29 RH) Signed as a Free Agent 1/7/93 Combined to hit .305/.356/.403 in 64 games with Columbus and San Jose last year. 61 G 182 AB 11 2B 2 HR 17 RBI 25 K 13 BB Threw out 40.6% of attempted steals and caught to an ERA of 3.23. Just 3 PB in over 530 innings. (8 years 168 days 2 year contract 600K)
C – Robert Serrano (25 LH) Acquired in 12/16/92 trade with LA. Made the AAA All-star game while in LA after being acquired from Milwaukee. 18 G in the big leagues 58 AB 5 2B 5 RBI 16 K 6 BB Thrown out 36% of would be base stealers. (86 days 112K)
1B – Ricky Hernandez (36 LH) Signed as a free agent 12/28/92. A 1992 All-star and the AL Silver Slugger award winner at 1B. Slashed .289/.367/.469 with 22 HR and 68 RBI in Dallas. A max effort guy who has great clubhouse presence. (11 years 35 days 3 years 6.90 million. 3rd year 2.5 million is a player option)
2B – Josh Janik (26 RH) 6th round (144th overall) pick in the 1992 Inaugural draft. Played 156 games wqith a .254/.303/.338 slash line. 27 2B 6 HR 99 K 36 BB 45-71 SB. Clearly needs to improve getting on to utilize the speed and hopefully will be reigned in a bit on the bases this year. His 4.89 RNG -4.5 ZR and .989 EFF are all numbers our scouts believe will improve. Team first guy whose not afraid to speak up. (5 years 13 days free agent after the year 430K)
3B – Josh Frasier (22 LH) 21st round (481st overall) pick in the1992 inaugural draft. .252/.316/.376 in 120 G 452 AB 33 2B 7 HR 38 RBI 43 BB 82 K. Looking for an uptick in the power numbers and OBP this year. Very young and our scouts believe there's still some improvement to be made. (1 year 4 days 112K)
3B – Ricky Preciado (26 SH) 17th round (385th overall) pick in the 1992 inaugural draft. Probably the most disappointing season of anyone last year. A .213/.284/.318 slash line in 123 G with 17 2B 10 HR and a 99/43 K/BB ratio. He's average at best in the field and has no flexibility to move around. No way to keep both he and Frazier for 1 position when neither can play anywhere else. He's a switch hitter who handles both sides well (but is better vs LHP) but is made it somewhat clear he does not want any part of a 'part time' role. There will be something done here, the sooner the better. (5 years 46 days 240K)
2B/3B/SS – Jesus Franco (25 RH) Acquired in 12/17/92 trade with LA. One of the games premier defenders at 3 different positions. A gold glove caliber defender from 2B to 3B he was brought in as a 5th infielder/Defensive replacement with the opportunity to win a job if he's that good. Still improving offensively. Hit a combined .268/.292/.326 between El Paso and LA with 13 2B and a HR. 18 RBI's. Walked just 10 times in 298 PA with 55 punch outs. Elite speed. (113 days 112K)
2B/SS – Sawao Suzuki (22 RH) Signed as a Free Agent 12/12/92. Games #1 prospect. Well above average at 2B and SS and features a true middle of the order bat packed into a 5'10” frame. Signed a 4 year 9.46 million dollar deal to leave Japan. Scouts all believe there is room to improve on both sides of the ball. Brings top of the order speed as well. (signed 4 year 9.46 million dollar FA deal, 2.75 million 4th year is player option).

OUTFIELD
  • 1B/LF/RF – Brian Corbett (22 LH) 3rd round (49th overall) out of the U. of Kentucky 1992 June Draft. Blew through the minors last year and ended up hitting .269/.377/.512 with 21 HR's 59 RBI's in 84 games at AAA Knoxville. In 12 games of a September call up he hit .333/.421/.545 with 2 HR 5 RBI over 33 at-bats. Ranked as the league's #46 prospect. Sure-handed with limited range and an average arm he's likely to settle in left. His bat plays nicely in the 3 through 6 slots and I'd like to see him start down a bit and work his way up to ease the pressure.
  • LF/RF - Sergio Suazo (22 SH) 12th round (288th overall) pick in the Inaugural Draft. He's a pure LF and a move to RF is only in case of emergency. Being a switch hitter does help with that little defensive versatility. In 142 games, 582 PA he hit .231/.329/.386 with 21 2B 3 3B and 17 HR driving in 69 with a K/BB ratio of 111/69.He's a legit threat from the left side, big time power and an improving eye. Right handed he can hold his own but he sets up as a great platoon/PH option. Problem is with the DH that option is not exercised much.
  • 2B/LF/CF/RF – Juan Grimaldo (21 RH) 10th round (240th overall) pick in the inaugural draft. A true CF who can play the corners and a little 2B in a pinch. Covers a football field worth of ground and pretty much catches what he touches. Below avg arm. In 155 games 678 PA he hit .244/.291/.369 20 2B 9 3B 13 HR 60 RBI and walked 37 times. He has elite speed and is one of the games better bunters. He was 37-56 in SB last year. Our scouts all agree he still has room to improve his contact skills and plate discipline.
  • 2B/LF/CF/RF – Bettino Rivera (24 (RH) Acquired on 12/16/92 in a trade with Memphis. A true 4th outfielder who can play anywhere. Outstanding range, solid glove but an arm better suited to left. He hit .243/.298/.330 in 98 games last year. 10 2B 2 3B 4 HR and 30 RBI's. 22 walks to 51 K's and was 28-46 in SB. His inability to make consistent contact will likely be the reason he never holds an everyday job but his speed, defensive versatility and attitude make him the perfect 4th OF.
  • 1B/LF/CF/RF - Alvaro Lopez (22 SH) 35th round (817th overall) pick in the inaugural draft. Every now and then you get a stunner. Lopez hit .330/.380/.580 with 33 HR and 105 RBI's in 135 games at Knoxville. No one alive saw the power. He hit 2 HR in September call-up. He's a legit OF at all three spots and has been ranked as having the game's best arm in the outfield. He breaks camp in the outfield mix and is, like Suazo, a bomber from the left side. Far weaker in all facets from the right. He also brings above-average speed and base running/stealing skills.
  • RF – Danny Parra (22 SH) 7th round (145th overall) pick in the inaugural draft. One of the few bright spots last year. .270/.347/.386 over 148 G and 654 PA. 31 2B 11 HR 50 RBI and a K/BB ratio of 97/62. Another RF with an arm many say equals Lopez's. He's actually on the block and a possible trade candidate. Just like the other 2 SH OF'ers he's a dominant bat from the left side while many think he's bad enough RH he should abandon switch hitting.

4/27: El Paso got the news that 22-year-old Tommy Vess has a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the year. He was their 3rd pick last season out of Old Dominion and off to a 2-1 2.83 ERA over 4 GS 28.2 IP 25 H 16 K
4/27: Francisco Rodrigues (EP) scattered 5 hits in a 5-0 CG SHO of San Jose
4/28: Dallas placed 33-year-old reliever Dan Harvey on waivers and it caused quite a stir. A key piece in San Diego's championship run last year the right-hander voiced his displeasure loudly at the move. LA and Houston have been rumored to be trying to convince him to sign.
4/28: Stephen Santucci (NY) fanned a career-high 11 in shutting down the Maulers in Detroit 7-0. He's 3-0 1.37 after an 11-14 3.42 1992 season with New York.
5/1: Dallas 1B Sean Batt had a career-high 5 hits in a 5-5 3 RBI win over Indianapolis

BALTIMORE TEAM NEWS:
5/3: Backup C Ramon Contreras has asked for a meeting and its purpose was clear. He wants to play every day. I honestly can't give him a hard reason beyond the fact Serrano is hitting .290/.338/.500 and playing great defense. They're defensively equal and in 63 games between Columbus and San Jose Ramon hit .305/.358/.406 with 11 2B 2 HR 14 RBI 25 K and 14 BB. He threw out 45% of would-be base stealers last year and in 9 games this year he's gunned down 55% while Serrano has gotten just 30% in his career (though just 34 games) and is at 37.5% this year. Maybe there's a meeting with the manager to be had here? This is the first time in my career a player has come to me about playing time and in my opinion, actually made a case. As long as this stays in house I'm going to have a chat with Eric McCammond and get his thoughts.
