How do you draft in historical and random debut leagues?

In the initial fantasy draft, do you draft first by position, regardless of who is there - getting SPs first, or Centerfielders, or Shortstops?

Or do you get the best player or pitcher available period, and then build around them?

Do you start with a conception of the kind of team you want? contact, or power hitting, or speed, mixed offense, balance, or go straight for superstars and work around what you have after that?

Do you draft position player, pitcher, position player pitcher?

Do you use the moral and character settings over the ratings, and do you go mainly by RL stats, or by the ratings in drafting?

Later, with the limited number of annual rounds, do you draft to fill holes (need a 3B, so bypass a great 1B etc., need relief pitching so bypass an excellent OF)? Or do you draft the best player available and then make trades of the player whose position you upgraded? Or is there another way to go?

I tend to grab centerfielders and first basemen first, because there never seem to be enough of these in the initial drafts, at least not of ones with many RL at-bats to make a difference, or to get a sense of how good they are. Once I have one of these, I get a starting pitcher, then the other position, then one or usually two starters (I am obsessed with the fear of not having five starters, even if the fifth is a mediocre long-relief man or aging former star).

I tend to forget to draft shortstops, catchers and relief pitchers early, and those positions I often have to accept scraps. Not sure why. Do others have some similar block on some positions early in the draft?

In the inaugural draft, I usually draft the best available starting pitcher, some more pitchers, and then players with pretty good contact and great defense. I start my RDL saves in either 1871 or 1901 with those same 1800's or 1901 settings, so my teams only need a few pitchers, so I try to find really good ones to fill that need.

After that, I just choose whatever needs my team has in the next draft. There's always a position that sucks. :P
